AI to the rescue
• Welcome, Travellers. Pop in, refresh, and take home a little piece of our Pub with you. Thanks for supporting a small, friendly pub – we appreciate you! Then, I asked ChatGPT: “Could you suggest items a Pub could sell as souvenirs to tourists with a price range between $2 to $20”.
Years ago, I learned the key to turning prospects into customers was developing relationships with prospects. Recently, I was in a small coastal ‘touristy’ town in Northern NSW. The first thing I noticed was many tourists (prospects) looking to find toilets. The next thing I noticed, the one and only Pub in the town had signs on every door and window facing the main street displayed this sign: “NOTICE: Toilets in this hotel are for hotel patrons only” I heard many of the tourists in the street commenting on how confronting the notices were and they made negative comments about the Pub and the Owner. So, I decided to seek help from ChatGPT. I described the scene and asked for ideas on how to encourage tourists to become customers in the Pub. I posed this question to ChatGPT “Please give me friendly words for a new sign that offers the use of the pub toilets in exchange for buying something from the souvenirs on display.”
“There are many in all price ranges.” ChatGPT replied. “Here are just three suggestions.”
($2 – $5). Postcards ($2–$4) – Featuring the pub, local landmarks, or a humorous design. ($6 – $12) Local Snack Packs: Small bags of nuts, jerky, or Aussie treats (e.g., Tim Tams, macadamias). ($13 – $20) Pub-branded Caps ($15–$20) Classic trucker hats with the pub’s name or town.
Again, I asked ChatGPT “Can you give me an Australian wholesaler where I can buy inexpensive souvenirs?”
“Sure can.” said ChatGPT.
“Souvenirs Australia Pty Ltd: Established in 1951, this company offers a wide range of souvenirs, gifts, and novelties. Their product categories include ashtrays, badges, bags, boomerangs, creams, oils, soaps, hats, keychains, magnets, mugs, novelties, placemats, shot glasses, stickers, and tea towels. See: https://www. souvenirsaustralia.com.au/”
This was ChatGPT’s reply:
“Sure! Here’s a choice of three friendly and welcoming sign ideas that encourage tourists to use the toilets while also supporting the pub by purchasing a small souvenir.” • Welcome, Travellers. Need a quick stop? Our restrooms are available for visitors, and we’d love for you to support our little pub by grabbing a small souvenir, a drink, or a snack while you’re here. • Welcome, Travellers. We’ve got cold beers, great coffee, and some fun local keepsakes – the perfect way to remember your visit!
I leave you with this Charles Kettering thought: “If you have always done it that way, it is probably wrong.”
