2 T h e ssa l o n ia n s 3:10-12 In the parable, the first servant to report said, “Thy pound hath gained ten pounds.” Here was manifested acceptance of service, engagement in service, faithfulness in service, and recognition of ownership and author ity. This servant received commenda tion and promotion because of his fidelity (cf. 2 Tim. 2:12). The second servant had the same acceptance of and engagement in service,, but evi dently there was less wholehearted ness in it. He received no word, of commendation, and less reward than the first man received. The Lord is al*> ways able to see the heart’s condition. The unfaithful servant brought his report also (vs. 20-26). This one had rejected the service and had hidden the pound in a napkin. This word signifies the cloth used to wipe away the sweat of toil. The servant did not Deed it for this purpose, for he -did not toil. He acknowledged the rela tionship of a servant, while he re jected the obligation of service. He “feared” the lord, but he did not love Him. The lord dealt fairly with him. The servant’s accusation was unjust, but the lord took him on his owh ground, and convicted him with his own words. Thus it was that those “that stood by” (probably angels, who of ten appear in-judgment, cf. Rev. 16:1- 17) were ordered to take away from the servant the pound he had bur ied. In reality, the unfaithful servant himself, as well as all 'his future, was wrapped up with the pound that was hidden in the napkin. Opportuni-
Luke 19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received fhe kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given- the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. 17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faith ful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities; / 18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. 1? And he'satd likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. 20 And another came, saying, Lord, be hold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: 21 For I fearefc thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst hot sow. 22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I Judge thee, thou wieked servant. Thou knewest that* I was an aus tere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: 23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? 24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. 25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.) 26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. LESSON TEXT: Lk. 10:15-26; 2 These. 3:10-12. GOLDEN TEXT: “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, work ing with his hands the thing which Is good, that he may have to give to him that need- eth” (Eph. 4:28). DEVOTIONAL READING: Prov. 31:10-20. Outline and Exposition I. T h e R ew ard of I n d u st r y , (Lk. 19:15-26) I N A parable, Jesus likened Him self to a man who went to ‘an other country, leaving his goods with his servants with the injunction, “Occupy till I come.” The lesson tells of his return, and the reports and re wards of the servants. “Having received the kingdom,” he rewarded his servants by appointing them over its cities. At present, Christ’s kingdom is unrevealed. But when He returns, it will be manifest ed, and the fidelity of His servants will be rewarded (cf. 1 Cor. 3:11-15; 2 Cor. 5:10).
