S ince its founding in 1911, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has upheld a legacy of achievement, service, and brotherhood. The Executive Secretary, now known as the Executive Director, has played a crucial role in managing the frater- nity’s operations, ensuring financial stability, and expanding its national and global influence. These leaders have been instrumental in main- taining the fraternity’s mission and vision, adapting to changing times while preserving its rich heritage. The Journal is providing a historical overview of the distinguished men who have served in this esteemed capacity The current Executive Director, and 109th Elder Watson Diggs Awardee Brother John F. Burrell, brings a wealth of experience in leadership, athletics, and fraternity operations.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, and raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Brother Burrell was an honors graduate of Vicksburg High School. He continued his education at Hinds Community College on a scholarship before transferring to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), where he enrolled in the athletic training program. While at USM, Burrell was an active leader, serving as President of the Student Athletic Training Club. He worked as a student athletic trainer for the football and men’s basket- ball teams, and for one year, he also assisted the women’s basketball team. His dedication to athletics extended beyond the university, spending five summers as an assistant athletic trainer for the Atlanta Falcons.
