Dr. Paul T. Batties 1941-2024 Indianapolis-based Physician, U.S. Air Force
P aul Terry Batties ter Invisible on October 8, 2024. The son of Paul A. Batties (Iota 1934), a physician, and Louise Terry Batties, an educator and civic leader. Batties graduated from Indianapolis’s Shortridge High School at age of 16. He graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington in 1961. He graduated (Alpha 1959), M.D., 83, entered the Chap- from the School of Med- icine, Indiana University in 1965. The next four years of his medical career were spent at Receiving Hospital, Wayne-State University in Detroit, MI where he completed his rotating internship and
residency in the “specialty” of internal medicine. Batties was licensed to practice medicine in four states: Michigan, Indiana, California, and Kentucky. Having been inducted into the National Organization of The American College of Cardiology to become a Fellow of The American College of Cardiology, he entered the United States Air Force in his late 20’s as a Captain, and he was an honorably discharged veteran of the Air Force and Vietnam War. Upon his return to the United States, he completed advanced professional training on a fellowship at the University of Kentucky to become
a Cardiologist. Batties enjoyed an extensive
Society of African-Amer- ican History and Culture, Batties was cited as a Med- ical Icon as Indianapolis’s first Black Cardiologist. He was a member of the Aes- culapian Medical Society, National Medical Asso- ciation and the Bachelor Benedict Club. Members of Paul Terry’s immediate family that are left to cherish include: cousins: Betty Jo Williams, Carla D. Johnson (Ivan), Thomas L. Batties, Mark D. (Samantha) Batties, IV, Robin (Maurice) Pritchett, Shawn M. Batties, Tyrone and Jack Hickman, George Dixon, Melvin Johnson and Gwen Frencher (Ronald), and sister, Camile Hill. ♦
practice of Cardiology and Internal Medicine in Indi- anapolis. He was in private practice at Methodist and Winona hospitals. Batties was decorated with medical awards, certificates, and accom- plishments ranging from Who’s Who in Executives and Business to Profes- sional and Civic Awards. Batties was a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi. He was also a member of the American Medical Political Action Committee. He was a His- tory Maker as a founding member of the Association of Black Cardiologists in 1974. In the Indianapolis
