FIREWORKS, CRUISING THE STRIP, AND BARBECUE Fourth of July, Past and Present
and Roman candles before the adults set off the bigger fireworks. It was really a family holiday for us, and relatives from other states would often come to visit around that time.
We’ve made it to the midpoint of the year, and the Fourth of July holiday has arrived just in time for some much-needed family and downtime. Here at the clinic, we’ve been busy serving patients in record
numbers, so a long weekend filled with barbecued ribs and chicken — and setting off fireworks for the kids — will be a great way to decompress a little. The Fourth last year was a bit strange because of the pandemic. Most people stayed home and had celebrations just with their immediate families. We’ll see what events happen this year in the community, but for my family, we’re pretty content to celebrate at home. Last year was really the first year that
As I got into my 20s, the family element (and, of course, barbecuing) was still there, but in the evenings, I was really into cleaning up my 1986 Monte Carlo SS, picking up my buddies, and cruising the strip in downtown Flint. We just called it hanging out because there was really not much going on in the places we went
to, except people just hanging out. Sometimes we’d go to neighboring cities to see what was up there, and we always met new people that way.
I bought fireworks and put on a show for the kids. We didn’t want to venture out because of COVID-19, but I think I might have started a new family tradition.
Even though some aspects of the holiday celebration have changed over the years, one thing has been really consistent: barbecue. It’s not the Fourth
of July without something on the grill and sides like mac and cheese to go with it. And really, holidays are such a great time to get together with family. We live in such a busy, fast-paced society that it can be easy to get caught up in your work. Holidays are a good reminder to take time to slow down a bit, spend time with family, and enjoy simple pleasures like sparklers and baby back ribs.
Now that my sons are a little older, I think they really enjoy watching the big colorful booms that light up the sky. And, of course, sparklers are always fun.
Enjoy the holiday and happy grilling!
Fireworks really bring me back to the days of my childhood. My friend Keith’s dad was the one who’d buy the fireworks to put on a neighborhood show. He got the good stuff — the big, loud fireworks that you couldn’t buy locally — from his travels south. The holiday back then was all about hanging out with family, barbecuing, and lighting sparklers

ARE THE CARTOONS YOUR KIDS WATCH ACTUALLY MADE FOR KIDS?
So, how can parents make sure the cartoons their kids are watching are safe, wholesome, and educational? In recent years, as YouTube has continued to amass countless hours of video content — much of it geared toward children — they’ve developed YouTube Kids, their streaming site for children under the age of 13. This site isn’t airtight, however, and disturbing content can sometimes slip through the cracks. Parents might also find value in sticking to certain channels or streaming services, such as PBS Kids, Nick Jr., or Disney+. There are also organizations like the Parents and Television Media Council, whose website, ParentsTV.org, can help parents determine which cartoons are okay for their kids to watch.
With the many streaming platforms out there, kids have access to a more diverse array of content than ever before. That being said, parents need to be extra vigilant about which shows and videos are captivating their children’s attention, particularly when it comes to cartoons. Cartoons on their own aren’t bad for kids. In fact, enjoying them in moderation can have myriad benefits for a child’s development. They can bring laughter and relieve stress, engage a child’s imagination, help them develop their language skills, and teach them about topics ranging from mathematics to social skills. The best cartoons can be bright, colorful, funny stories that help children learn and grow. That said, though, not all cartoons are for kids, nor do they teach good lessons. Many cartoon characters encourage violence and speaking rudely
Ultimately, the best way to ensure cartoons are safe is to watch with your kids. After all, this turns a solitary activity into one where parents can learn, laugh, and bond with their children.
to teachers and other authority figures. Additionally, with adult animation becoming more popular in recent years, many of the cartoons available on TV, streaming services, and YouTube are explicitly not for children.

weekend is meant to celebrate our freedoms, if you’re experiencing joint issues or arthritis, you may be missing the freedom to move without pain. Many people think arthritis is a condition that afflicts older adults, but the truth is that two-thirds of arthritic joint pain sufferers are between the ages of 20–65! Even if your joint pain hasn’t developed to the point of arthritis, you may still experience tenderness, inflammation and swelling, stiffness, or other symptoms that prevent you from moving freely and exercising. There are many at-home remedies to ease your pain, including self- massage, warm baths with Epsom salts, and light stretching. But for long-term joint health, movement is also essential. However, you may be wondering how to get moving again if you’re in pain or worried about making your condition worse.

The Miraculous Mountain Cat
THE MEOW AT 10,000 FEET
The cat stayed with them for some time
High on the slopes of Bristen, a mountain in the Glarus Alps in central Switzerland, a pair of skiers discovered something unexpected. At 4:30 a.m., the skiers climbed toward the summit of Bristen when they realized they weren’t alone. They were being followed by a cat — not a lynx or a wildcat, but a little mewling house cat. How does a house cat end up on the slopes of a snow-covered, 10,000- foot mountain? This was an answer the skiers wouldn’t get. They weren’t even sure what to do with a cat in general. It’s likely that it simply wandered away from one of the nearby towns or villages near the base of the mountain, but even for a human, that’s a major undertaking. Lost, the cat followed the only sign of civilization it could find: the skiers, Cyril and Erik Rohrer. “She started to shiver, and her paws began to bleed from the hard snow,” Cyril noted. “We picked her up and carried her when she was too exhausted to walk uphill anymore. We were definitely confused. I felt really sorry for the cat. She was really exhausted on the ridge underneath the summit.”
before they met up with another group of hikers who were headed down the mountain. The cat joined them for what would hopefully be a journey back home. And it was!
Remarkably, the cat’s owners were found. They revealed that their cat had vanished four days earlier and apparently followed yet another group of hikers up Bristen. “Animals do weird things. And they are way tougher than humans. They’ll never give up. Even though they are hurting really, really bad,” Cyril said of his feline hiking companion. Hopefully, that will be the little feline’s last trip up for some time!
