Fields Of Change: A Sustainability Handbook

ADAPTING EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE

BIODIVERSITY

Baselining: 34 species of animals inhabit Spotify Camp Nou stadium and FC Barcelona's surrounding facilities. These include 31 bird species, 2 reptile species and 1 mammal species.

Community engagement: The club have produced a guide to educate fans about the local wildlife. Mitigation: The club have established nesting areas for the different species of birds and bats (mammals).

Adapting: The London 2012 Olympics showcased adaptive reuse of existing venues. Iconic sites like the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre were renovated and repurposed, reducing the need for new construction. Wimbledon for tennis and Lord's Cricket Ground for archery. This approach reduced the environmental impact of the games.

Temporary Structures: The Games utilised temporary structures for various purposes, including hospitality, media centres, and spectator areas. Transport: The London Olympics integrated transportation systems effectively, utilising existing public transport infrastructure like the London Underground, buses, and railways to efficiently move athletes and spectators to and from venues.

NON-PERMANENT EVENTS

Leave No Trace: Organisers emphasise a " leave no trace " approach, ensuring that the event site is thoroughly cleaned and restored to its natural state after the competition concludes. Reuse of Equipment: Surfing equipment, including boards and gear, can be reused and shared among participants, reducing the need for new equipment production.

Natural Venue: The Tahiti surf event is held at Teahupo'o, known for its world- class waves. Using a natural venue reduces the need for extensive construction or alteration of the environment. Minimal Infrastructure: The event relies on minimal, non-permanent infrastructure. It typically uses temporary structures like beachside stages, seating, and judges' towers that can be set up and removed easily. Community Engagement: The event fosters a strong sense of community engagement. It supports local businesses, promotes tourism, and encourages environmental stewardship within the community.
