Fields Of Change: A Sustainability Handbook

Activity: Ready to apply your knowledge? Take a look at the scenarios below and create a plan for sustainable sports infrastructure in each case. Think about the different considerations in each context, and how impact can be measured, mitigated, and adapted to.

RURAL VILLAGE,

Location: Near a polluted river in South Vietnam. Population: Small, tight-knit rural community. Climate/Local Environmental Considerations: Experiences extreme monsoons. On the bank of extremely polluted river. Flood risk.

Unique Challenges: Limited existing sports infrastructure (only one run-down football pitch). Dealing with extreme river pollution and flooding risks. Unique Opportunities: Utilising natural surroundings for a variety of sports. Preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage and unique village traditions.

URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD,

Location: Tucked in a favela in São Paulo, Brazil. Population: Densely populated, lots of young people. Climate/Local Environmental Considerations: 6-month rainy season. Extreme pollution in nearby rivers. In close proximity to an old industrial estate.

Unique Challenges: Limited space in the densely
