04. The Syllabus: D. Sport and Waste
Fields Of Change: A Sustainability Handbook
The average ‘working life’ of a plastic bag is 15 minutes… but it can take up to 1,000 years for it to decompose.
Some Examples of Best Practice…
TSG Hoffenheim (Hoffenheim, Germany)
Chinnaswamy stadium (Bengaluru, India)
• Used a match against VfL Wolfsburg as a special match day for the Zero Waste Vision in collaboration with PreZero. • PreZero Arena previously made history by becoming the first European stadium to receive official certification from TÜV Süd for its waste and recyclables management.
• Has adopted a zero-waste policy, using volunteers to sort waste and educate spectators during Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Santiago 2023, (The Pan-American Games)
Derby County FC (Derby, England)
• Required suppliers to declare how much waste it generates, what type of waste it generates, and its final destination. • Apartment units that were built for athletes were sold to vulnerable families, and organisers donated all the furniture used in the athlete village to people affected by fires in a nearby region.
• Introduced a cup reuse and return scheme to eliminate single-use cups.
The London Marathon
Olympics Games Paris 2024 (Paris, France)
• The finisher medals are made from recycled zinc. • Kit bags are made from sugarcane, which is a type of bioplastic that is recyclable. • New Balance event T-shirts are made from 100% recycled polyester. • There will be water refill stations at each start area and on the course (at Mile 15) providing tap water from bowsers suitable for runners who are carrying their own container. • Buxton Natural Mineral Water bottles are made of 100% recycled plastic (excluding cap and label) and are collected separately, returned to Buxton and recycled into new bottles. These are 250ml bottles, specially produced for London Marathon Events by Buxton and are designed to help save water and plastic.
• Making extensive use of existing and temporary facilities in Paris with only two building projects required - for the Athletes' Village and the Aquatics Centre. • The Village uses a variety of low carbon initiatives, including the use of sustain- ably sourced wood instead of steel for the building's structural frame, while the Aquatics Centre has a concave roof, lowering the space of the area that needs heating.
Activity: Let’s think about the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028, and jot down some ideas about: 1. What kind of waste would be generated?
2. What would best practice look like? 3. What would bad practice look like?
