In 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke was the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Amazon. Injured and alone, the odds were against her but Juliane, raised by naturalists, had a special set of skills that helped her navigate the rain forest. While following the river to avoid walking in circles, Juliane dealt with the horror of finding corpses amid the crash debris, figured out how to avoid starvation, and battled swarming insects and infection before finally navigating to an outpost. Key idea and details: European explorers returned with fake news. One report described a giant woman as strong as ten men. That reminded Europeans of the Greek myth about warrior women called Amazons and the name stuck. b. Make inferences: At first she assumed that others had survived, too. But once she saw the dead bodies, she probably began to think that it was unlikely anyone else survived, including her mother.
