Buy the Basin is BACK! In the early 1990s, Buy the Basin was formed between the Midland Chamber of Commerce and Odessa Chamber of Commerce . In 2020, when our region and the nation were navigating COVID-19 protocols, we united again to encourage West Texas residents to shop locally . All told, for more than three decades, the Midland Chamber and the Odessa Chamber have worked together to support local entrepreneurs, owners, and operators, and to make sure the BUCK STAYS HERE . When you spend money locally, it has more than three times the economic impact compared to spending those same dollars elsewhere. That’s not an estimate—that’s data from The Perryman Group, showing how far your everyday choices can reach.

According to The Perryman Group, a job would be created in the Permian Basin if every person here spent just a little more each year: · 58 cents more at a local retail store · 27 cents more at a local restaurant · 43 cents more on local professional services If local purchasing in the Permian Basin rose to the levels seen in other regions, The Perryman Group estimates: · $4.1 billion in additional direct spending at local retail, restaurant, and service businesses · A total impact of $1.6 billion in increased gross product · More than $940 million in additional personal income · Nearly 19,500 new JOBS across the region

Buy the Basin isn’t just about pride in where we live. It’s about economic resilience and about keeping opportunity here.

It’s about ensuring that the success of the Permian Basin is built by the people who call it home.

Consumer purchasing habits have shifted dramatically in recent years, with many opting to shop online rather than in our own communities. Whether you’re shopping for everyday essentials, special occasions, services or gifts, consider whether a local option exists. Many businesses here now offer the same conveniences—online ordering, same-day pickup, curbside delivery—and something the internet can’t match: the ability to see and feel the quality of what you’re buying.

Local businesses don’t just make a living here—they invest here. They call the Permian home. They sponsor our youth sports teams, support nonprofits, donate to schools, and show up when our community needs them. When we support them, we’re strengthening the backbone of the Permian Basin. Show your support by displaying a Buy the Basin decal at your business! These and information sheets are available for free in our office lobby. SHOP LOCAL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Why should you shop local this holiday season?

1. It keeps dollars in our community. Local businesses recirculate more money back into the Midland economy than national chains. very purchase helps support jobs, wages, and reinvestment in the businesses that make our community thrive. 2. It sustains the small businesses that give Midland its personality. From family-owned restaurants to boutique retailers and homegrown service providers, local businesses shape Midland’s culture. Supporting them ensures that Midland remains vibrant, diverse and full of local flavor.

3. It strengthens job creation and workforce development. Small businesses are among the largest employers in Midland. When you shop local, you help create and retain jobs — from first-time employment opportunities to long-term careers that keep families rooted here. 4. It fuels community investment. Local business owners are often the first to sponsor Little League teams, donate to school fundraisers, support nonprofits, and invest in community projects. When they do well, Midland benefits. 5. It reduces environmental impact. Choosing nearby businesses cuts down on transportation and shipping. Local shops often source goods regionally, reducing the carbon footprint while boosting regional suppliers.

6. It builds relationships and pride of place. Shopping locally means interacting with people who know your name, care about the community and take pride in what they provide.

7. It helps sustain a resilient local economy — especially in an energy-driven region. A diverse local business base makes Midland stronger through economic cycles. Supporting local enterprises helps balance and stabilize the community beyond energy-sector highs and lows.

This month, Leadership Midland spent the day exploring housing and infrastructure. Realtors spoke, and the crew visited the Midland Community Development Corporation, Habitat for Humanity and the City of Midland Block Grants team. Updates were shared on development and transportation. Leadership Midland finished with touring the City Garage and finished at the water treatment plant.
