June 2024

After last month’s newsletter, I left many of you in suspense with my story about taking our dog to the vet because she was continually throwing up. The diagnosis was conclusive: Our fur baby had eaten a gecko. To put your mind at rest, we still have the dog. We did receive bills for more than $1,000 for her care, to make her stop throwing up, and to cover an overnight stay for (are you ready for this?) intravenous hydration. Our dog had thrown up so much that she was dehydrated and lethargic! Wealth Care

mental rudder, who helped him every day to put his world of pieces back together so he knew what to do and who he was. But fortunately, the husband was able to remain in the same facility. He still has his meals there and sees the same people. We set up this living arrangement for my mom and stepfather because they need more care than my family can give, but it also gives them the independence they desire. At 91, my stepfather is still free to get behind the wheel and drive my mom to get her hair done. On Wednesday mornings, they go to McDonald’s for flapjacks and bacon. All of this sounds pretty cute and wonderful and loving, which it is. But what makes it possible is the planning we did 30 years ago for my mom’s wealth care. She told us then that she didn’t want to go into a nursing care facility, so we discussed the options. The planning process took some time, some reasoning, and some discussion. But now, my mom and stepfather are together, safe and happy. I’m not comparing my mother to our dog! But just as our dog needed extra care, so do my folks. The wealth care principle holds true in both cases. Long before our dog met the gecko that sent her to the hospital, my wife wisely bought pet health insurance. Our deductible for all our fur baby’s vet bills was $50, and we were reimbursed for the rest. In my folks’ case, they bought long-term care insurance for the time when they could no longer live unassisted. By putting that long-term care insurance in place many years ago, they never have to worry about being unable to pay their bills or burdening their children. That is why we at Mattson Financial Services have these discussions at the beginning of your planning process — not amid the turmoil of care needs that emerge when you are 80, 90, or even 100 years old. Long-term care planning must be done 20 or 30 years in advance so everybody, including family members, is clear on your choices. That achieves our central goal — to lay solid groundwork for your retirement with a complete plan — not just one built on hope. A Complete Plan Provides Peace in Your Golden Years

Fortunately, my wife had done advanced planning based on the principle named in this month’s headline: Wealth Care. Let me explain.

We often begin retirement planning with clients by asking them how they want to plan for long-term care. None of us believes we will need it, but as we explain to our clients, there are three stages of retirement — the go-go years, the slow-go years, and the no-go years. The topic of wealth care falls into the latter category. My mother, for example, recently turned 100. As she was getting ready for her centennial birthday party, we realized that her usually sharp mental capacities were fading. My wife Nancy, whom we call Nurse Nancy, suggested we get her checked out for a urinary tract infection, and Nurse Nancy’s diagnosis proved correct. My mom’s doctor prescribed antibiotics, and she began recognizing my stepfather once again and recovering other memories. At age 100, she went to her birthday party wearing high heels! My mom’s example shows how widely people’s care needs can vary during the no-go years. We may need the full-on service offered by a nursing home, or we may just need the proper medication. My mom and stepfather, who is 91, recently entered a care facility where they live independently in an apartment. Cooking and cleaning are done for them, and their meds are monitored. That is all the care they need. Another benefit is that they have friends there. My mom and stepfather soon began eating breakfast with another couple in the facility. When the wife in that couple suddenly passed away, her husband had to be moved into dementia care. His wife had been his

EATING WELL ON A BUDGET Your Guide to Frugal Grocery Shopping

Are you tired of spending more money on fewer ingredients? You are not alone. While prices for most consumer goods have increased, food costs have increased even more. Grocery prices have increased by 25% since 2020, outpacing inflation by 6%. By buying food that costs less, lasts longer, and feeds more people, you can keep your grocery bills manageable while still eating well. Look for these foods at the grocery store to keep your wallet and pantry full! GROUND MEAT Whether it’s chicken, beef, turkey, or pork, ground meat is cheap and usable in many recipes. In addition to a range of options to meet dietary restrictions and preferences, ground meat is sold in larger quantities and costs less than many other forms of meat. Despite not being a “prime cut” option, ground meat is still full of protein that satisfies your hunger.

PEANUT BUTTER While everyone loves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, this inexpensive ingredient can also be used in a number of other recipes. It can be used as a delicious protein additive to smoothies or spread on celery to make ants on a log.

TORTILLAS Tortillas come in two main varieties: corn and flour. The former is more traditional and less expensive, but if you prefer flour, it’s still an economical option. While you can buy pre-cooked tortillas, the flavor is much better when you cook them yourself. If you buy in bulk, you can save the tortillas you aren’t ready to use by freezing them, allowing you to save more and only use what you need. Tortillas are also used by astronauts as a substitute for bread since they don’t leave crumbs when you eat them. If they are good enough for astronauts, they’re good enough for us! HIDDEN GEM VACATION DESTINATIONS

Are you tired of visiting hyped-up vacation destinations or getting lost in a big city or crowded national park? If so, consider a holiday at a less congested, more laid-back locale. These hidden gems offer beautiful views and exciting excursions — all without the headaches that come with vacationing to big-name destinations!

CRATER OF DIAMONDS STATE PARK If you have ever felt envious of the prospectors who made their riches during the California Gold Rush, then pay a visit to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, where you can discover your own hidden gems! You can discover rare rocks and minerals in a massive field birthed by volcanic activity, including diamonds, amethysts, garnets, and quartz. The best part? Anything you find, you can keep! Seekers have found more than 35,000 diamonds at the park since it opened in 1972, and with some luck, you could add a few more to that tally!

PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK Make an excursion to Pinnacles in California to enjoy the splendor of nature without having to share space with millions of tourists. With over 30 miles of hiking trails crisscrossing rocky hills and river-strewn caverns, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for memorable adventure. Despite its wondrous views, Pinnacles was named the 15th least-visited national park in 2023, with just over 340,000 annual visitors.

CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK Make your way to Oregon and dive into the deepest lake in the country! Crater Lake National Park’s namesake was formed when a volcanic eruption triggered a mountain to come apart in spectacular fashion. You can stay at plenty of campsites and find excellent fishing in the lake’s pristine and seemingly bottomless water. If you are a fan of hiking, fishing, or breathtaking views, then Crater Lake is for you.
