Greater Than All th e Great T HIS Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, has con quered more millions than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon. Without science and learning, He shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of schools, lie spoke such words of .life. as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie.beyond the reach of any orator and poet; without writing a single line, He set more pens in motion and furnished themes for more sermons, orationSsI discussions, works of learning and of art, and sweet songs of praise, than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times. —Philip Schaff. 4 %. RB ■ Mk M Superiority of Christ E VERYTHING in Christ astonishes me. His spirit overawes me, and His will confounds me. His ideas and His senti ments, the truths which He announces, His manner of convinc ing, are not explained either by human observation, or the nature of things. His birth, and the history of His life ; the profundity of His doctrine, which grapples the mightiest difficulties, and which is of those difficulties the most admirable solution; His gospel; His apparition; His empire; His march across the ages and the realms,—everything is for me a prodigy, a mystery insoluble,'which plunges me. into a reyery from which I cannot escape—a mystery which is there before my eyes, a mystery which I Can neither deny nor explain. Here I see nothing human. The nearer I approach, the more carefully I examine. Every thing is above me. Everything, remains grand^i-qf a grandeur which overpowers. His religion is a revelation from an Intelli gence which certainly is not that of man. —Napoleon. Christ, th e Preparer of Destin ies O UTSIDE of Christianity there have been grand spectacles of activity and force, brilliant phenomena of genius and vir tue, generous attempts at reform, learned philosophical systems, and beautiful mythological p’bems ;; no real profound or fruitful regeneration of, humanity or society. Jesus. Christ from His cross' accomplishes what erewhile, :in Asia and Europe, princes and philosophers, the powerful of the earth, and sages, attempted without success, tie changes the moral state and the social state of the world. He pours into the souls of men new enlightenment and new powers. For all classes, for all human conditions, He prepares destinies before His advent unknown. He-liberates them at the same time that He lays down rules for their guidance; He quickens them and stills them. , He places the divine law and human liberty face to face, and yet still in harmony. He offers an effectual remedy for the evils which weigh upon humanity; to sin He opens the path of salvation, to unhappiness the door of hope. —Guizot:'' Intercession of Christ W HEN Aaron entered the Most Holy Place, he was bound to carry the names of the tribes of Israel upon his shoul ders and upon his breast,—on his shoulders, in token that he bore the burden of their wickedness and their infirmities.; upon his breast, in token of his love and care for them as next his heart. Such a High Priest is our Advocate, “We haveinot a Iligh Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmi ties, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” He died to make satisfaction. He lives to make intercession. We are near His heart, that He may both die and live for Us . It is a glorious thought: we have in heaven One we can think of, know, love, believe, delight in; bone of our bone, flesh of our flesh; One Whom no accident can disable, no quarrel can estrange, no death remove; for He ever liveth to make intercession for us. —R. B. Nichol.
