Stora Enso Acquires De Jong Packaging Group Stora Enso has acquired Dutch packaging com- pany De Jong Packaging Group. The acquisition, made at an enterprise value of approximately EUR 1,020 million. Stora Enso’s Packaging Solutions division plans to increase its corrugated packaging capacity by around 2,000 million square meters, including the ongoing projects of De Jong Packaging Group. With expansion expected to intensify in 2025, this year’s EBITDA of EUR 114 million is predicted to increase by EUR 40 million; the maximum additional earn- out payment in 2024 is anticipated to reach EUR 45 million. Forming Partnerships The company previously divested its three corru- gation packaging plants in Russia due to market uncertainties and halted all imports, exports, pro- duction, and sales in light of the war in Ukraine. Consumers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of packaging, and as part of the solution, many retailers are seeking recycled content in packaging. • Active packaging held the largest share of more than 30 percent in the market in 2020 due to its wide use in the sustainable packaging market. The potential of nanotechnology is actively explored in the food packaging sector including active pack- aging. Thereby the transformation of active com- pounds from micro to nanoscale provides a new opportunity. • The food and beverage sector held the largest share of more than 35 percent in the sustainable packaging market in 2020 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.5 percent during the forecast peri- od 2021-2026. Several market drivers and challenges will shape the future of the sustainable packaging market, in- cluding: increasing demand for sustainable pack- aging in the personal care and healthcare industry; growing government initiatives toward sustainable packaging; instability in the price of raw materials; and lack of awareness of the value of sustainable growth in many developing economies.

Revere Group Installs BOBST MASTER M6
Experience the power of SWED/CUT ® “Any defect, any mid-run press stop, can entirely eliminiate margin from a job. As QA Manager, it is up to me to prevent waste before it happens. That’s why I rely on FLXON’s products and support to gain our competitive advantage. QA Manager, Wide Web Pressroom
Revere Group, Seattle, Washington, has ordered a MASTER M6 machine from BOBST, which will complement the two BOBST MASTER M5 presses for film products and labels already in use at the company. Family-owned and managed, Revere Group man- ufactures direct-contact food packaging, includ- ing film, bags and pouches, and labels, with most customers found in the confectionery, nutrition and gourmet food industries. Founded in 1938, the fourth-generation company is headed up by co-owners and co-presidents Mark and Sally Revere. In-House Production Over the past few years, Revere has established in-house pouch production by combining the ca- pabilities of a BOBST MASTER M5 flexo press with an inline solventless laminator, and a Karlville pouch-making line. As the company scales up the flexible packaging side, the new top-of-the-range MASTER M6 will offer improved efficiencies, allow- ing Revere tomeet customers’ demands for faster delivery, reduced waste, and packaging produced with new eco-materials, according to the company. The current trio of BOBST MASTER inline flexo presses at Revere are all running UV LED low migra- tion inks for printing food contact packaging. One MASTER M5 is a 630mm wide machine for flexible packaging, while the other is a 370mm dedicated to label production, both purchased in 2015. The recent addition, the MASTER M6, is a multi-process, multi-substrate machine which is dedicated to film printing. Revere’s ten-color MASTER M6 features turret un- winders and rewinders and runs with inline sol- ventless lamination. Revere is leveraging BOBST’s oneECG technology for seven-color expanded gamut printing with high- ly reliable color consistency to hit more than 93% of the Pantone colors, and DigiFlexo automation technology for pressure setting, registration control and adjustments while the press is running – on all three machines. Stand-up pouches, including gusseted pouches, currently account for 6.7 percent of the flexible packaging market, with a predicted Compound An- nual Growth Rate of 5.1 percent to 2025. The sustainability aspect of pouch-making is im- portant for Revere, whose customers are keen to pursue a greener agenda in response to concerns

Mondi Opens Paper Product Recyclability Laboratory Mondi opened the its first recycling laboratory at its Frantschach mill in Austria to test the recy- clability of paper and paper-based packaging using non-paper components such as coatings. Conducting recycling tests in-house speeds up the process for developing sustainable packaging, said the company. While paper packaging offers many sustainability benefits, it also has certain barrier functionality limitations for products like perishable food. To enhance its functionality, non-paper compo- nents such as barrier coatings may need to be added, which in turn can impact recyclability, said Mondi. The data collected at the laboratory can be used to improve existing products and provide reliable information about their environmental impact. Mondi will also use the results to determine how the design of new packaging can be improved as well as how best to improve the circularity of its material flows. The tests are carried out on various paper and pa- per-based packaging products developed by Mondi and can determine whether the packaging can be efficiently recycled. The laboratory works in a sim- ilar way to industrial recycling facilities, but on a smaller scale. Results generated provide concrete evidence that the material can be recycled. from consumers about the impact on the environ- ment of plastic packaging. The company offers pouches that are printed on more eco-friendly films with higher recyclability either due to the compo- sition of the material itself or the mono-material laminated structure. With the combination of oneECG printing and Di- giFlexo automation, Revere is also supporting sus- tainability goals by wasting less materials in pro- duction through ultra-fast setups and changeovers. Furthermore, the process uses only CMYK+OGV inks, which stay in the press between jobs, report- edly saving time and speeding up time to market for customers, because more jobs can be run in a shorter amount of time. FPA Publishes State Of The Industry Report The Flexible Packaging Association’s (FPA) 2022 State of the Flexible Packaging Industry Report pro- vides industry converters, suppliers, investors, and analysts with insight into the performance of the U.S. flexible packaging industry over the past year. The U.S. flexible packaging industry is estimated to be $39 billion in sales for 2021, up from $34.8 billion in 2020, and industry volume is estimated to be 27 billion pounds of shipments in 2021. The focus of the report is on the segment of the industry that adds significant value to flexible ma- terials, usually by performing multiple processes, such as printing, laminating, coating, extrusion, and bag/pouch manufacturing. This segment of the in- dustry is estimated to be $29.5 billion for 2021 and does not include retail shopping bags, consumer storage bags, or trash bags. Key Findings: • Flexible packaging represents approximately 20 percent of the total $184.65 billion U.S. packaging industry and is the second largest packaging seg- ment behind corrugated paper. • Films and resins account for the largest input spend for converters with those two categories ac- counting for more than two-thirds of material pur- chases. • 2021 saw a record number of merger and acqui- sition activity with 62 transactions recorded. • Imports and exports each jumped an estimated 18 percent. • FPA converter and supplier members ranked “Labor/Talent” as the industry’s biggest issue for 2022.
