ties are the basic features of the res- taurants that you can visit, while a traditional fish soup competition is held here each August. SREMSKA KAMENICA Sremska Kamenica is a Novi Sad neighbourhood located in the foot- hills of Mount Fruška Gora, with a centre that’s dominated by churches and a monument to Jovan Jovanović Zmaj. Kamenica Park is home to the Marcibanji-Karačonji Castle, which is adorned with sculptures from the former royal court park. The monu- ment to poet, doctor and Serbian Roy- al Academy member Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833-1904) serves to remind us that he is still among the most beloved children’s poets. The house where he lived from 1875 to 1904 is today Zmaj’s Museum and is located at 1 Jovana Jovanovića Zmaja Street. FUTOG This settlement on the outskirts of Novi Sad is usually associated with the famous Futog cabbage, but few people are aware that Futog is actu- ally among the oldest settlements in these lands and is almost as old as Novi Sad itself. Archaeological re- search has confirmed the existence of surface findings on the territory of Futog that date from prehistoric to medieval times. This fact is con- firmed by numerous dugouts iden- tified by archaeologists, with traces that are still visible on the plains of today’s municipal territory. The in- fluence of Futog’s geographical po- sition, fertile soil and close proximi- ty to the Danube ensured that it was one of the main hubs of trade on this part of the Danube. KOVILJ If you’re wondering where you could go for a daytrip from Novi Sad, one suggestion could be Kovilj - a mythical settlement on the bound-
ary of the Kovilj-Petrovaradin Fen. If you arrive in Kovilj from the direc- tion of the settlement of Kać, you will first come across the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, which was built in 1829, and the second house from the church was the birthplace of writer, poet and translator Laza Ko- stić (1841-1910). Located nearby is a monument to the soldiers of World War I who fought on Kajmakčalan mountain. At the end of the village is the Serbian Orthodox Kovilj Monas- tery, with its church dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabri- el. Tradition suggests that this mon- astery was founded by Saint Sava, though it was first mentioned in of- ficial records dating back to the mid- dle of the 17 th century. You can end your daytrip by heading to the Ar- kanj canal, renting a boat and en- joying nature, or you can stay at the chard restaurant. Many visitors will nonetheless decide to enjoy the beau- ty of the local backwaters of the Dan- ube and admire the population of storks that nest on many of Kovilj’s lampposts. BEGEČKA JAMA The Begečka Jama [Begeč Pit] Nature Park is located on the terri- tory of the city of Novi Sad. It en- compasses an area of 489 hectares and has been placed under state protection. Located on the left bank of the Danube in the Novi Sad set- tlement of Begeč, the area is rich with river forests, reeds and swamp- marsh vegetation. Around the lake, which covers a surface area of 40 hectares, are forests of white and black poplar, black mulberry and white willow, while Begečka Jama is also a popular fishing area. The territory of the park is inhabited by as many as 150 species of bird, the most significant of which is the mute swan, which represents a sym- bol of Begeč.
NOVI SAD HAS DESCENDED TO THE GREAT RIVER not only with its oldest streets and most repre- sentative buildings, but also with new city districts, promenades, beaches, chard restaurants and weekend set- tlements. The Štrand city beach and the holiday home neighbourhoods of Ribarsko ostrvo and Kamenjar are traditional places to holiday on and enjoy the Danube. The banks of the river are home to areas of important bird habitats, some of which – such as the Kovilj-Petrovaradin Fen Spe- cial Nature Reserve and the Begeč Pit Nature Park – are of international importance. That’s why we’re taking you along the Danube on excursions beyond the city, and you will certain- ly also visit Petrovaradin Fortress – one of the most beautiful gems of the Danube – by yourself. RIBARSKO OSTRVO At the very entrance to the holi- day home settlement of Ribarac, you will come across the Ribarsko Ostr- vo [Fisherman’s Island] tourist vil- lage, which comprises several barg- es, cottage eateries and restaurants that are very popular among Novi Sad residents.
