SPEAKING IN A RECENT IN- TERVIEW FOR CNN, director Rob Reiner opened up about the ending that he’d originally had planned for the iconic rom-com — and the re- al-life reason he changed it. “The original ending of the film that we had was that Har- ry and Sally didn’t get together,” Reiner said of the 1989 classic. In- stead of the iconic New Year's Eve scene, the initial ending saw Sal- ly Albright (Meg Ryan) and Har- ry Burns’ (Billy Crystal) “will they/ won't they” romance ending quite anticlimactically. "It was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking and then walking away from each other. ever going to be with anybody – and that gave birth to When Har- ry Met Sally.” But everything changed when Reiner crossed paths with his now- wife, Michele Reiner, while direct- ing the Nora Ephron-penned clas- sic. “I met my wife Michele, who I've now been married to for 35 years. I met her while we were mak- ing the film and I changed the end- ing,” said the director. And we say ‘thank you, Michele!’ Reiner believes that they are still together, but that this doesn’t mean they haven’t had tremendous ups and downs or been on the brink of divorce and got back together, just like any relationship. In the “tear-jerking” ending — the cul- mination of years of tension and friendship — Harry delivers one of the most memorable monologues in the film, telling Sally, “When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” And Reiner pre- viously revealed that Crystal, now 75, actually came up with some of the dialogue himself. Notably, Billy Crystal is still grateful to co-star Meg Ryan al- most 35 years after the film’s re- lease. “The movie is beautiful and simple and appropriate and every shot is just right. We were thrown together by director Rob Reiner and screenwriter Nora Ephron, chosen to be this couple and you never know — almost 35 years lat- er, we’re still a couple to everybody. New generations see this movie and feel it and watch it over and over again on Valentine’s Day, on New Year’s Eve... You know, peo- ple fall in love every day, and peo- ple fall out of love every day. This movie is an evergreen that way. It’s a beautiful thing...”, so says Crystal, who actually came up with some of the dialogue in the film. And all has been well in the romcom world for a whopping 35 years!
