The Fundamentals - 1917: Vol.1

208 The Fundamentals His teaching and His claims by Scripture, or He en1oms obedience to the law (as in the case of the cleansed lepers) , o r He asserts the inviolability o f the law till its complete a fu ti l o f n illm o e f nt s , u o p r er H se e di a n c g cu a se n s d a v b ac li a n t d in e g d a a nd law self w -r h ig ic h h teo th u e s y ge w n e e r r e bound to observe. A few instances of explicit recognition o f the Old Testament Scriptures as proceeding from God and having divine authority, may be here adduced. In His p S r e e r h m e o n. n siv o e n s t t h a e temM e o n u t n u: t t " h V e e L r o ily rd , I m s a a k y es u t n h t i o s y st o r u o , ng Ti a ll nd he c a o v m en and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled" (Matt. 5 :18). In the context the law is distinguished from the prophets and desi gn ates, therefore, the Pentateuchu; and surely the divine origin of this part of Scripture is unquestionably implied. No such inviolability could be claimed for any m ic e a r l e a l n y d h h u e m ar a t n le i s n s s s ti o t n ut p io r n ete o n r d p e r d o t d o u d ct e i v on o . te t Wo h G e o n d t w he ha h t yp sh o o cr u i l t d m ha a v n e d g m o e n n e t t o o f s G u o p d po o r f t n h o is ne in e d ff ig e e c n t, t '' p " a f r o e r nt G s, od he co " mm m ad a e nd th ed e , c s o a m y ing, Honor thy father and mother" (Matt. 15 :4). In purging the temple the Lord justifies His action in these wordsu: "It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer" (Matt. 21 :13). Again: "As touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, .and the God o f I in sa g ac a , si a d n e d th th e e c G om od m o a f nd J m ac e o n b t ?" of (MGo a d t , t. y 2 e 2 h :3 o 2 ld ). th A e g t a r i a n d u: iti " o L n a o y f men, as the washing of pots and cups : and many other such like things ye do" (Mark 7 :8). So many passages of the Old Testament are quoted or alluded to by the Lord as having r s e a c r e y iv to ed m , o a r ke as cit a a w ti a o i n ti s ng of fu th lfi is llm cla e s n s t . , t T ha h t es i e t a is ll s m ca o r s c t el c y er n t e a c in e l s y imply the divinity of Scriptureu; for no man, no creature, can tell what is hidden in the remote future.
