THE ACTIVE LEARNER... PREPARES. E veryone’s busy, and it can be hard to keep up with responsibilities. The active learner knows that being a good student is their job. They prepare for class by doing their job : reading, studying and doing their homework. IS OPEN-MINDED. An active learner has an open mind . That doesn’t mean they adopt every new idea or belief that comes along, or change their core values. Active learners are open to new ideas, even if it’s just for the purpose of learning about them to expanding their schemas.

THE PASSIVE LEARNER... SLACKS. A passive learner comes to class unprepared , not knowing what’s going on and not caring. They don’t do the reading. They don’t study much. What they don’t realize is that even a boring class is a lot less boring when you’re prepared. GROWS MENTAL MOLD. A passive learner has a closed mind . Like an old gym bag, it’s dark in there and starts to stink.

THE BIG PICTURE

Active learners construct their personal knowledge base by engaging their minds in the process of learning and by actively seeking out and absorbing the information, knowledge, and experiences around them. That improves comprehension, confidence, motivation, and builds a larger schema. Accept personal responsibility for your learning. Prepare for class. Engage in intellectual conversion. Taking your learning personally goes a long way toward college and career readiness.
