STEP 3: READ Expository reading is an active process requiring concentration and energy. Be attentive. Be focused. Don’t let words just slip past your eyeballs. Read for ideas and with the intent to understand. Identify the point of each section. Write out answers to the chapter questions as you read. Review pictures, charts, maps, and illustrations to help you create a visual image of the content in your mind. STEP 4: RECITE It may feel weird at first, but reciting answers aloud is one of the best ways to activate and strengthen neural pathways for memory . Read and answer the chapter questions aloud. Explain the main concept(s) in your own words. Do it again, trying not to look at the book. Tell yourself a short story about what you read, with a beginning, middle, and end. If you can’t explain an idea or concept, go back, reread that section and try again.

STEP 5: REFLECT Close the book. Reflect on what you read. This gives Brainy a chance to sort and organize the information. Ask yourself: What do I now know about this subject? How does this information fit in with what I already knew? What might my teacher ask me in class or on a test? What do I need to reread for clarification? Are there any gaps in what I can recall?

Your future is filled with a lot of expository reading. To be college and career ready, it's good to develop the skills and strategies that enable you to read with better comprehension and remember more of what you have read. SQ3R is an easy-to-use strategy that helps your brain gather, organize, and recall expository text. When you're assigned expository reading do not open your text and begin reading. First, make a brief survey of the material to determine the big picture. Ask Brainy questions to activate your schema. Read with the intent to understand. Recite main concepts aloud and take some time to think about what you read. SQ3R is a very productive study skill for college and career readiness.
