Hey, Are You LISTENING? Is there a difference between hearing and listening ? We often use the words interchangeably, but do they mean the same thing? Is “Do you hear me?” the same as “Are you listening to me?” Hearing and listening are not the same:

CHAPTER 14

PRODUCT PREVIEW

To hear means: to perceive or apprehend by the ear. To listen means: to hear something with thoughtful attention and give it consideration.

Learning Goals By the end of this chapter you will be able to: 1. State the benefits of active listening. 2. Describe active listening strategies. 3. Identify personal behaviors and attitudes which prevent active listening in the classroom.

Hearing is a passive activity; listening is an active, thinking process. Developing good listening skills is important because as a student, much of what you are responsible for learning is delivered through lecture or spoken instructions. In high school and college, lectures will be longer and more complex. In college and career, spoken instructions will be quick, concise and not repeated for your convenience. Good listening skills are not automatic. Developing good listening skills requires practice, effort, and discipline. For academic and career success, it's important that you up your listening game.
