SUMMER ESCAPES: SAN DIEGO

It’s really not fair to the rest of the country.

We have beaches, attractions, dining, and nightlife all backlit by our typically perma- sunny skies. For culture, we have the historic Balboa Park featuring anthropological exhibits at the Museum of Us, classical art at the Museum of Art, and avant-garde pieces at the Museum of Photographic Arts and Institute of Contemporary Art. Next door is the San Diego Zoo, which offers both learning and cooing, with 12,000 rare or endangered animals over 100-acres of this wildlife park. For a bit of fresh air and classic summertime, there’s Coronado Island with its stunning beaches and landmark Hotel Del Coronado, built in 1888. THE BRICK HOTEL We all know about speakeasy bars, but what about a speakeasy hotel? This 10-room, self check-in spot brings together urban charms and coastal ease, in a historic 1888 building featuring exposed brick walls paired with beachy furnishings and views. Surrounded by dining staples, like Cococabana and Q&A Restaurant and Oyster Bar, as well as Frankie's Cocktail Lounge and Stone Beer Garden as your libation destinations, this boutique shelter is only a quick walk away from the Oceanside Pier. Prefer a more beachfront homespun stay? Check out availability for the Pacific Villas and Bungalow.

THE CASSARA CARLSBAD Perched above the sprawling seasonal Carlsbad Flower Fields and nearly equidistant from Legoland, the Sea Life Aquarium, and North County’s stunning beaches is this family-friendly resort overlooking the San Diego shoreline. Take the kids to the theme parks through the private pedestrian entrance or shuttle your way to some retail therapy at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets. While on site, take a dip in one of two of their outdoor pools, and snag some Mediterranean bites from the Cassara Kitchen & Bar.
