We always talk about how hard we work while doing chipping, felling, climbing among other arboricultural operations but really how hard is this work? This pro - gram will illustrate the energy expended for the various activities we do and most importantly, what we can do to reduce fatigue and improve safety.

John Ball is a Professor of Forestry at South Dakota State Univer - sity where he instructs courses in arboriculture and forestry. He also serves as a campus arborist.

When is it best to undertake reduction pruning or remove a branch? What is a heading cut and how does this differ from tree topping? And restoration pruning, how does this fit as a process to help a canopy regrow into something any landowner would be proud of? Can you prune to reduce the height of trees to compensate for decay? Learn the answers to these questions and pruning strat - egies that arborists and urban foresters can implement to promote tree canopies that help with growing the urban forest.
