Sooty Bark Disease: Diagnostics & Research in the Pacific Northwest Monday, October 3, 2022 | 3:50 pm to 4:50 pm (1 CEU) Presenter: Dr. Joey Hulbert Location: Bay 5 Dieback has been observed in bigleaf maple trees throughout the Pacific North - west for more than a decade. Research from trees sampled in 2014-2015 revealed the dieback was associated with development and hotter summer temperatures, but no biotic agent was identified. Starting in 2020, City of Seattle staff began no - ticing consistent signs of Sooty Bark Disease on many dead or dying tree species throughout Seattle, including bigleaf maple. Since then, Cryptostroma corticale — the causal pathogen of sooty bark disease— was confirmed infecting many tree species through collaboration with Bartlett Tree Experts and Washington State University (WSU). This collaboration stimulated many research questions and generated several resources, such as a public health webpage about Maple Bark Disease risks in people and enhanced diagnostic capacities at WSU. While many questions remain, it is clear Sooty Bark Disease will continue to be an issue for trees and communities in the Pacific Northwest. More collaboration and informa - tion sharing is essential for understanding and mitigating the effects of sooty bark disease in the region.
