ATC ‘22 ARBORPALOOZA: EXPLORING THE WIDE WORLD OF TREES

Veteran Tree Care: Eurasian Lessons Tuesday, October 4, 2022 | 9 am to 11 am (2 CEUs) Presenter: Guy Meilleur Location: Boardroom 5 (7th Floor)

There’s a world of difference between the US and older cultures when it comes to valuing and managing older trees. The European Union funded Vetree.eu to as - semble and disseminate time-tested strategies from across Europe for managing veteran trees. VETree identifies: Ecological interactions of the tree and its associ - ates; cultural connections to regions and people; and compliance with international tree care standards. During this progra we will review the VETree.eu program, its best e-learning tools, video and graphics, with an eye to adapting this knowledge in North America. Par - ticipants will discuss what may/may not work, how it might advance tree risk as - sessment and appraisal, and what form a similar program in the US might look like. We will also review the certifications for veteran tree consultants and practitioners (VETCert.eu) that have been developed, criteria and scope, and discuss whether this content can be translated for PNW trees and society. Case studies for managing veteran trees in Europe and North America will also show how these concepts can be integrated with our arboricultural work.
