Only 1-2 percent of a mature tree is living. What are the benefits for the other, non-living parts? What is deadwood? Does removing dead branches make a tree healthier? Why would we consider retaining deadwood? In this presentation, we will examine many benefits that deadwood offer and many, that may be underval - ued. Additionally, we will journey around the Pacific Northwest and look at how deadwood is being used as a resource rather than waste.

Brian French founded Arboriculture International, LLC in Portland in 2013. He is a skilled climber with a broad range of arboriculture related experience and carries certifications such as Certified Ar - borist, Certified Tree Worker, and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor. Brian has been practicing for over 22 years in Oregon, is dedi - cated to and contributor of research for a better understanding of trees and safer work practices. Brian is a climber and consulting arborist with a focus on wildlife tree retention and habitat pro -

grams. Serving as coordinator for the Oregon Champion Tree Registry and serving on the Portland Heritage Tree Program, he focuses on the preservation of signifi - cant, old trees and their associated flora and fauna.
