Remembering Pearl Harbor
Published by Newsletter Pro • www.NewsletterPro.com
On Dec. 7, 1941, at 7:55 a.m. local time, roughly 200 Japanese planes launched a surprise raid on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. This horrendous attack lasted two hours, taking the lives of over 2,000 Americans and wounding close to 1,200 people. Many Navy ships and aircraft were destroyed. President Franklin D. Roosevelt referred to the attack as “a date which will live in infamy.”
REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR
The day following the horrifying attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.
Now, 80 years later, we remember this attack that launched our country into World War II. Today, many debate whether or not the United States would have engaged in the war at all if Pearl Harbor had not happened. This tragic date symbolizes both American resilience and grit as the United States came back to overcome and defeat Japan. Although so much was lost during Pearl Harbor, Americans maintained their faith and remained courageous to defend our nation, people, and freedoms. As so many of our men and women of the armed forces have since deployed around the world to protect these same values, we memorialize the courage of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who saw our country through so much turmoil resulting from the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Every Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor survivors, veterans, and citizens from all over gather to remember and honor the service members and civilians who lost their lives in the Pearl Harbor attacks.
