Los Angeles from Dallas in Janu ary 1906. On hand to greet him was Oilman Stewart. This was the beginning of an association that was to have a profound influence on evangelical Christian work in the West. T. C. Horton was bom August 3, 1848 in Cincinnati, Ohio. While still a young man, he gave his life to the Lord and became very active in church and Sunday school work. Later he moved to Indianapolis where he went into business and became very successful, with an income three times as large as that which he afterwards received in Christian service. He gave up his business to enter Christian work, taking a position as the Secretary of the Indianapolis YMCA. He was called to that position by a business men’s prayer group of which Ben jamin Harrison, afterwards presi dent of the United States, was a member. Horton was 27 years old at the time. It was here that he met Dr. A. T. Pierson, with whom he later served as an associate pastor and a man who greatly influenced his life. From Indianapolis Horton went to St. Paul in 1883 to do mission work for the Hope Presbyterian Church (now the Goodrich Avenue Presbyterian). A year later he re ceived a call to Bethany Presby terian Church, Philadelphia, where he served for four years as associate pastor with Dr. A. T. Pierson. Hor ton did not have formal theological training and while he was in Phil adelphia he spent some time every day in systematic Bible study under the direction of Dr. Pierson. These four years of study under a great man were a rich experience for Hor ton and bore fruit in his later life. In 1888 Horton returned to St. Paul to become secretary of the YMCA. While engaged in this work he also organized the North w e s te rn Bible Training School which opened in October 1889. As far as is known the school closed after Horton left St. Paul. Horton felt the YMCA in St. Paul was becoming liberal in its program and resigned in May 1892. The next October he organized an independent church called the Gos pel Tabernacle located in the center of the city not far from St. Peter’s Cathedral. He ministered to this
