How a New Experience, Big or Small, Makes an Impact The Best Gifts Aren’t Always ‘Things’
Last month, I talked about Quad City-style pizza and why it’s so great. I even mentioned that my sister mails me one of their frozen pies every year for Christmas or my birthday. Let me explain why that’s one of the best gifts ever, pizza aside. Gift giving is exciting, but it isn’t easy! Getting new gifts for people you’ve known your whole life can be a real challenge, especially for people who already “have it all” or are generally difficult to find gifts for. I’m probably that guy for people in my life, so here’s my advice: The easy solution isn’t to get them any thing at all — emphasis on “thing.”
from famous restaurants, delis, and gourmet artisans all over the nation. In fact, my wife’s cousin has her own brand on Goldbelly known as Tipsy Scoop, which makes alcohol-infused ice creams. Not only are their ice creams incredibly delicious, but they’ve also received attention nationwide. (A boozy ice cream is the ultimate post-breakup gift, when you think about it — but you didn’t hear it from me!) Over the years, I can’t say any single gift “experience” has been better than the others — and that’s the beauty of it. When you give something that leads to a new experience for someone, it’s completely unique. Of course, you can also give gifts that reflect on the newest experiences in the lives of those you love, too. Recently, my daughter got into a kids’ show that was produced in France and only has one season. Unfortunately, there’s no widespread merch, so I knew I couldn’t walk into a Target and find a great shirt for her. That’s why I found a perfect shirt for her online — designed by an independent artist. I’m glad I could give her a T-shirt from her favorite show! When someone can’t afford or ignores buying themselves necessities, it’s powerful to give those items to them, but, for everyone else, small gifts can mean the world when they offer something unique to a person’s life experience. Researching merch for a little-known show might seem like an extra mile to some people, but even if the gift is relatively small, it’s the extra mile that counts.
Rather, give the gift of a new experience.
A new experience isn’t always flashy. It isn’t always expensive. It can be as simple as providing a frozen pizza that’s nostalgic for someone else or getting tickets to see a favorite comedian, band, or sports game. The truth is that, in our busy lives, we don’t always make time to experience new things for ourselves. As a loved one looking into someone else’s life, you can offer them the opportunity to have a new experience. Maybe it’s a gift card to a new restaurant that they’re curious about but haven’t gotten a chance to drop in yet. As a kid, I always got excited about toys and video games. It’ll probably stay that way for kids for a long, long time. I mean, let’s be honest: Not all kids can appreciate new experiences, depending on their interests and what it is.

The Type of Sleep You Get Matters! How to Wake Up Refreshed
Are you getting enough shut-eye but still feeling groggy when you wake up? The type of sleep you get matters, and a sleep schedule can help ensure you’re cycling through all the stages of sleep your body needs. Sleep is broken up into four different stages. During the first stage, which only lasts about 5–10 minutes, your body is softly drifting off, and as your brain slows down, your breathing and heartbeat slow as well. When you transition to the second stage, you become less aware of your surroundings, your eye movements cease, and your body temperature drops. Moving into the third stage, your body will drift into a deep sleep, where you will not be awakened by small noises and your muscles are
completely relaxed. In the fourth stage, your body is in a deep, restful state. In stages three and four, you’re getting REM sleep, which is when your body is in its deepest sleep, and your breathing, heart rate, and temperature all reach the lowest level. In these stages, your body is able to fight sickness, begin repairing itself, and commit information to memory. During REM sleep, which occurs about 90 minutes after your head hits the pillow, your body is completely relaxed, and you begin to dream. Throughout the night, you will progress through these stages of sleep multiple times, but usually not in a perfect sequence. You will likely be in each stage of sleep about 4–5 times per night, and one cycle typically lasts about 90–110 minutes. Too much or too little REM or non-REM
sleep can affect the quality of your sleep and how refreshed you feel.
Quality sleep is important to make sure you are recharging your body, strengthening your mind and immune system, and prioritizing your health. If you never achieve deep sleep throughout the night, sleep deprivation sets in, and you won’t get the proper rest you need to recover. By setting a sleep schedule, you can make sure you are hitting the hay each night at a reasonable hour and allowing yourself to properly cycle through the different stages of sleep. Be sure to clear your mind before tucking yourself into bed and make sure your bed is comfortable to promote the best possible sleep — your body counts on it!
“I was recommend Attorney Matthew Konecky through an old friend of his. I had a civil issue that was just on the tip of being criminal. However, if it weren’t for the glory of God, he would have not placed Matthew’s services in my path. Matthew is professional, courteous, and knowledgeable — definitely knew his stuff. Additionally, he is honestly transparent. Something that sets him apart from attorneys in his particular practice of law. I highly recommend Matthew above any attorney in Palm Beach. HANDS ON 10 AND 2! Updated Cellphone Use Laws in Florida
Distracted driving is one of the worst bad habits for drivers today — a dangerous consequence to inappropriate phone usage. Our first priority while driving is to focus on the road, which is difficult to do while trying to multitask. Talking on a cellphone reduces reaction time by 40%. One of the biggest causes of accidents in Florida is due to distracted driving. Consequently, there have been some changes in laws in regard to cellphone usage while driving in Florida. To my fellow Floridians, here are some updates that you need to know. 1. You can talk on the phone while driving. It is not illegal to talk on the phone while driving, but when you are in a school or construction zone, you must be using your
device in a “hands-free” mode. In other words, your phone cannot be in your hand. This is the only time you would need to use a hands-free device while driving, but it is advised that you use a hands-free device at all times. 2. Texting while driving is now a primary offense. It is illegal to text and drive in most states, but in Florida, this was previously a secondary offense. Law enforcement could not pull you over for texting while driving unless you were pulled over for a primary offense, like running a stop sign. But in 2019, texting while driving became a primary offense. Law enforcement can now pull you over without any other moving violation.
or red light, there is no violation. However, it is best to put your phone away and stay focused on the road.
Penalties for Violating the 2019 Florida Cellphone Law If you are pulled over for violating the cellphone law, you will get a three-point assessment on your driver’s license. The violation for first-time offenders is $30 plus court costs and fees. A second violation, within five years after that, is a moving violation with a fine of $60 plus court costs and fees. A first-time offender can choose to take a driver’s safety course to have points and fees waived. Cases may also get dismissed if first-time offenders show the courts that they have purchased a hands-free device after the violation. If you ever find yourself dealing with distracted driving charges, you’re far from the only one. Make the Perfect Snowball in 3 Steps
How to Make the Perfect Snowball With and Without Snow!
If you live in a snowy climate, you’ve likely made at least one snowball — but how good was your technique? It turns out the process of snowball-making is more complicated than grabbing a handful of powder and squeezing it. To understand the nuance, Popular Science asked both a NASA astrochemist and a director from Montana State’s Snow and Avalanche Laboratory to weigh in. According to the astrochemist, a truly perfect snowball would need to be made in a lab or outer space. Those are the only places where you can achieve pressure high enough to melt the snow and refreeze to make a “meniscus” (aka “snowball glue”) throughout the ball. But if you don’t have a private lab or rocket ship, here’s the next best thing. 3 Steps to Snowball Perfection 1. Test the snow for “free water.” Your snow can’t be too soggy or too dry. You want what The International Classification for Seasonal Snow on the Ground calls “wet” snow, which is 3%–8% water by volume. To see if your snow is worthy, try the squeeze
test. If it sticks together when you squeeze it without gushing water, you’re set! 2. Keep your gloves on. There’s no need to go gloveless if your snow passed the squeeze test. You may be tempted to try turning dry snow into wet snow with your body heat, but ignore the urge — at best you’ll create a fragile snowball with only a thin shell of snowball glue. 3. Crank up the pressure. The tighter you squeeze your snowball, the better it will be! At the annual Japanese snowball fight Yukigassen, players use molds to make extra-tight snowballs. You can buy one on Amazon for under $10. The Snowball You Can Drink If your backyard is snowless, we have good news: You can still make snowballs — the drinkable kind! The Snowball is a classic Christmas cocktail named for the dome of froth that appears when you stir it. It’s made by mixing one part lime cordial and two parts Warninks Advocaat Liqueur with ice, then straining the mixture and adding six parts lemonade.
