Hola Sober OCTOBER

Hola Sober

Words of Wisdom From Hola Sober Sisters VILLAGE VOICES Today I am celebrating 6 months of no booze!! 🥳 . WHAT!!? Me? No way!? Yes, way and I can honestly say I feel so much better for it! In the past if someone said they weren’t drinking I’d be like what, why, really?? I couldn’t understand it. I loved my wine, a little bit too much, but no different to many many people. I tried cutting down a bit as I was getting fed up with doing it, feeling rubbish, indigestion, poor sleep, and feeling a bit meh with little motivation, and I realised what a hold it can have. It is after all an addictive substance. We are conditioned to drink alcohol from a young age. It is a rite of passage to becoming an adult. The first legal drink at 18!! You then have it to celebrate, and commiserate, on a good day, bad day, sunny day, or any day! It is more socially acceptable to drink than not to drink and it’s the only drug that you have to justify not taking, how mad is that!! I initially intended to quit for a month. I only got to 26 days as I wasn’t sure I could enjoy our planned mini-break without alcohol 🙄 but after a few days of overindulging, I realised how much better I had felt those previous three weeks. I missed feeling that good, so I had another go and I was more committed. I got stuck into reading some quit lit, learned a lot of true facts about alcohol, got chatting with some people who were doing the same as me, and decided to go for 100 days! That went really well and I felt even more amazing so I decided to go for 6 months, and during that time I didn’t miss it, lost any desire for it, and felt positively fantastic without it. You don’t need to have ‘a problem’ to decide you’re better off without booze and it’s not the easiest thing I’ve ever done (did I say how much I loved wine!?) but having learned a lot about alcohol, and also finding that the good times and nights out are, and should be, about the people and the experience (which you enjoy more when you’re not pissed, and you don’t wake up with a hangover) it’s by far one of the best things I’ve done, up My AF journey started with This Naked Mind The Alcohol Experiment , and chatting on the “companion” forum there, and in September 2022, I joined Susan Christina’s Hola Sober Pledge 100 , which was amazing and provided a wealth of self-development tools and ideas and I think this helped immensely. Susan was recently on Sober Dave’s Instagram live, which can be watched back (Thursday 14th Sep) I would also recommend the Dryy App, which is like a Facebook for people quitting or reducing their alcohol. It was set up by Andy Ramage who does a daily live (in there and on his own Facebook page) and Matt Pink aka Better Life Guy on Instagram.

Lots of sober love, Caroline B xx (2023) - This message was posted on Facebook by this brave lady!
