HS - Other Elective Options Advanced Logic Elective

Instructor: Dr. Jonathan Nebel

9th-12th Grade, Semester You wake up in the morning and put on a orange shirt. Thus, it is true that you are wearing a orange shirt. But, you could have also picked out a purple shirt. So, it seems that it is also true that you could be wearing a purple shirt (i.e. it is possible that you are wearing a purple shirt). How are we to understand these claims about what could be true? Advanced Logic will give us the tools to solve these puzzles. We will examine propositional logic and modal logic before applying these tools to arguments related to the existence of God, to how things could have been, and to truths within a multiverse. Creative Writing Elective Instructor: Mrs. Tracy Abrey 9th-12th Grade, Full Year This workshop-style course invites students to explore their imagination through original poetry and fiction. Students will experiment with voice, structure, and style while learning techniques to strengthen their writing craft. With a focus on creativity, self-expression, and peer feedback, this course encourages students to take risks, refine their work, and develop confidence as writers. Ecological Design Elective Instructor: Ms. Nichole Werbin 9th-12th Grade, Semester In this hands-on course, students will design, build, and maintain plant and animal habitats to benefit both the biology classroom and future HCA students. By caring for living organisms, students will deepen their understanding of anatomy, physiology, and ecological roles while practicing responsibility and stewardship. History Through Film Elective Instructor: Mr. Keith Miller 9th-12th Grade, Semester History Through Film is intended to expand the historical knowledge through the medium of Hollywood. Students will learn about several topics important in changing the culture and history of the United States. The students will need to get a signed permission slip gaining parental approval of assigned movies. Students will also produce a semester project over a historical topic that will be covered by movies shown in class. Outside reading and class participation are expected. Field trips will be part of the class experience. (DC) Macroeconomics Instructor: Dr. Jonathan Nebel 10th-12th Grade, Semester This course introduces students to the big-picture workings of the economy, including topics like inflation, unemployment, GDP, fiscal policy, and international trade. Students will explore how governments, businesses, and consumers interact in the global marketplace and examine the impact of economic decisions on society. Through real-world examples and critical thinking, students will gain a foundational understanding of economic systems and their influence on daily life. Students enrolled in this course may dually enroll and receive college credit through Spurgeon College. (DC) Microeconomics Instructor: Dr. Jonathan Nebel 10th-12th Grade, Semester This course focuses on the decision-making of individuals, households, and businesses within an economic system. Students will explore concepts such as supply and demand, market structures, pricing, and the role of government in regulating markets. With real-life applications and interactive learning, students will gain insight into how everyday choices impact the economy on a smaller scale. Students enrolled in this course may dually enroll and receive college credit through Spurgeon College.
