A Message from Professor Alimonti
Greetings! It has been quite a while since our last newsletter. A lot has been happening at Molloy CSD! Way back in the fall of 2019, we had a successful ASHA CAA site visit and learned later our MS SLP program had been reaccredited for a period of 8 years! In the spring of 2020, we very quickly initiated a clinical telepractice program which remains successful, and allows our Molloy SLP students and clients to engage in diverse and accessible clinical experiences. As we prepare this newsletter, we are entering the third year of the highly anticipated CSD Ph.D program. Additionally, New York State has approved a 5-year dual degree BS/MS program, and we are planning the 5 annual Molloy CSD Convention. Expansion of clinical services is ongoing as we now serve over 100 clients each week at the Molloy Speech, Language and Hearing Center. Additionally, please reach out to Molloy CSD about obtaining hearing aids! th Read on to learn more about the achievements of our CSD students, alumni and faculty. We are making strides in the areas of scholarship, and local and international service. Don’t forget to look for pictures of you and your classmates!

MEET THE ADMINI- STARS BEHIND THE SCENES AT MOLLOY CSD:
ANNEMARIE MCMAHON:
Annemarie McMahon is an administrative assistant at the Molloy University Speech, Language, and Hearing Center. She has been with Molloy University for 10 years and the Molloy Speech, Language, and Hearing Center for 7 years. To say she is the backbone of the speech center is an understatement. Anmarie’s smile greets the clients as they enter. She works with Professor Ascher to ensure the clinical schedule is set and runs smoothly each semester, including all session recordings. This is no easy feat with over 100 clients served each week at the center! Additionally, Annemarie is always happy to help the students troubleshoot computer issues, while also ensuring affiliation agreements with externship sites are up-to-date, and managing clinic finances and supplies. When asked what the most rewarding part of her job is, she said the interactions with clients and caregivers, whether children or stroke patients. Thank you, Annemarie. We would be lost without you. JENNIFER TENNET-ARMOUR:
Jennifer Tennet-Armour is the CSD Administrative Coordinator at Molloy University. Jen began her journey with the department as an Administrative Assistant in September 2021 and stepped into the role of Administrative Coordinator in October 2024. In her current role, she manages the day-to-day operations and ensures the smooth functioning of all administrative aspects of the department. From overseeing budgets to coordinating course schedule changes, assisting professors like Professor Alimonti and Dr. Datta, and supporting students across all three programs, Jen is at the heart of departmental logistics. She plays a key role in organizing colloquiums and assists with classroom management, always ensuring both faculty and students have what they need to succeed. For Jen, one of the most rewarding parts of her job is watching students grow. This includes seeing undergraduates overcome their fears, graduate students evolve into mentors, and witnessing the supportive connections that form across levels of study. Recently, Jen was encouraged by Dr. Datta and Dr. Reilly to step into teaching, expanding her role in the Compassionate Healthcare summer academy for high school students. Jen took a leap outside her comfort zone, leading a workshop that included a vocal hygiene exercise using a straw, especially useful for singers. The experience came full circle when her own daughter participated in the class. With this inspiring moment behind her, Jen is looking toward the future with plans to continue teaching and expanding her role in academic development. Without a doubt, the recent accomplishment of obtaining a Master of Science degree in Instructional Design, combined with her administrative experience and growing passion for student engagement and education will continue to make her invaluable.
WELCOMING MARLENA!
MARIA RUOTOLO: Maria Ruotolo is an administrative assistant at Molloy University Speech, Language, and Hearing Center. She has been with the Speech, Language, and Hearing Center for a year and is a constant source of support and reliability. Some of Maria’s tasks include greeting clients and caregivers, collaborating with professional staff, managing clinical schedules, working with students, taking messages, and ensuring that the center is prepared for the following day. She believes the most rewarding part of her job is interacting with the caregivers and clients, especially the children. Maria likes to make parents feel more comfortable and talk to them when they need support. Thank you, Maria, for all your help. We’d be in a difficult spot without you!
Marlena is currently a new member of the CSD Department team at Molloy University. Presently, she is getting acclimated to the office, routines, and meeting students and faculty. Marlena also works at
the clinical mental health clinic four days a week. Her background in corporate retail, which has sharpened her people skills and allows her to look at her role with a fresh set of eyes. Marlena is looking forward to a new change and is eager to embrace her new role at Molloy University.
Powering Us Through The Year
MOLLOY UNIVERSITY CSD NEWSLETTER
LIVING MOLLOY’S MISSION AT HOME & ABROAD
Serving International Communities: To supplement our service provision on the ground in Jamaica, W.I., Molloy faculty now maintain Jamaican registrations as speech- language pathologists throughout the year. This enables us to supervise our students as they virtually provide services to clients in Jamaica, throughout the calendar year. We have implemented a unique program wherein clients receive services virtually each semester and also receive a face to face therapy session when we are traveling. Further, this program integrates a student clinician mentorship model which benefits the students and the clients who experience increased consistency.
Molloy CSD students, faculty and staff live the Molloy Mission at home and abroad. Whether it is our regularly occurring service trips to Jamaica, W.I., or our local service provision at any number of sites, our students and faculty are happy to ensure accessibility of services for those who might not otherwise be served.
Community Care Mobile Clinic : Serving The Local Communities :
Molloy’s Community Care Mobile Clinic provides valuable health care services to individuals in need. Speech-Language Pathology students and faculty engage in clinical practice with students and colleagues in nursing, social work, music therapy, and clinical mental health counseling. Mother Cabrini Health Foundation funding allows us to offer free hearing, speech, language, and cognitive screenings, as well as follow-up evaluation, treatment and hearing aid services free of charge. We are living Molloy’s mission.
Other Community Based Programs:
We are proud to also donate services weekly at varied sites. While our reach continues to expand into varied types of schools and facilities, our relationship with Nassau County’s Head Start programs is long standing. Molloy’s students recognize the established impact of early childhood language enhancement. As we enter our fifteenth year of partnering with the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County, we would like to acknowledge Kristin Brelsford, M.S. CCC-SLP TSHH who has been the primary clinical educator at these sites and recently celebrated her tenth year anniversary at Molloy in 2024.
Molloy CSD:
Updates From Our CSD Community and Outreach Committee:
Where communication builds community
Molloy CSD has a new committee! Since its inception in the fall of 2023, Dr. Erin Reilly has chaired our department's newest committee and led organizational and fundraising efforts. Consisting of varied CSD department students, faculty and staff, the committee has prioritized both educating the public about the communication sciences and speech-language pathology, as well as supporting students in their journey to become SLP's. For example, the committee began participating annually in the New York Hall of Science's STEM Career Expo in 2023. This event brings awareness to high school students about the communication sciences and the field of speech-language pathology.
Different minds shared missions
Additionally, the committee has been actively fundraising to fund a new scholarship for Molloy SLP students who demonstrate financial need. In addition to two successful Scholastic Book Fairs, the committee's raffle sales at our Fourth annual Molloy CSD Convention in March of 2025, enabled the first Molloy CSD student to receive the first ever Molloy CSD Future Speech-Language Pathologist Scholarship for this fall of 2025. Congratulations to Alyn Calzada! The first recipient of this award. Alyn recently received her B.S. In Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology from Molloy and fully matriculated into our MS SLP program this fall! Congratulations are also in order to committee chair Dr. Erin Reilly and all the committee members who have worked so hard over the past two years.

PLEASE REACH OUT TO DR. REILLY AT EREILLY2@MOLLOY.EDU
CONNECT Program for Neurodivergent College Students
Dr. Erin Reilly is the lead instructor of the Connect lab and helped create the program. She also teaches a class and helps with the recruitment of students entering the program. The Connect program was designed to give students who identify as neurodivergent additional academic and social supports that they do not receive through college. The Connect lab is a class that helps students set social and leadership goals as well as promotes self-advocacy. The speech, language, and hearing pathology graduate students are supervised by Dr. Reilly. She emphasized that students look forward to coming to class every day and participating in the discussion posts, which is a very rewarding part of the program.
Dr. Barbara T . Schmidt Has Retired It is difficult for many alumni and faculty to think of Molloy CSD, and not also think fondly of Dr. Barbara T. Schmidt. Having founded the bachelor's program in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology and the M.S. Speech-Language Pathology program, Dr. Schmidt will always share a close association with the department and her faculty and former students/colleagues. Dr. Schmidt ensured that the M.S. program she designed was both innovative and service driven. She ensured students not only learned and practiced the most current evidence-based practice techniques, such as with state-of-the-art instrumentation, but also that the students would be immersed in service. Though she moved on to an administrative role as Associate Provost in the years prior to her retirement, Dr. Schmidt remained a valued mentor to the program faculty throughout her time at Molloy. While happily retired, and enjoying some increased time at the beach, no one will be surprised to learn that she is still making her mark in the language and literacy world through volunteering as a reading tutor for English Language Learners. We thank you Dr. Schmidt! You are greatly missed!
WELCOMING NEW FACULTY Welcome New Faculty
Professor Malikah Williams
Professor Williams received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Speech-Language Pathology at Hampton University in Virginia. As a speech-language pathologist, Professor Williams has 13 years of experience working with children in early intervention and school districts, as well as the geriatric population in skilled nursing facilities and acute care. She is currently practicing at a skilled nursing facility where she also supervises student externs and finds dysphagia and aphasia particularly interesting. At Molloy, Professor Williams provides clinical education both at Molloy’s Speech, Language and Hearing Center, and at Community Care Clinic events. She has been at Molloy for three years and finds the most rewarding part of her job is seeing progress happen. Professor Williams believes that as a speech-language pathologist you put in a lot of work, but when you witness progress happening, you know you're doing the right thing.

She loves attending the students’ graduations and celebrating the students in any way possible. Professor Keating began her third year at Molloy this fall of 2025.
SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND HEARING CENTER AT MOLLOY UNIVERSITY
The Molloy Speech, Language, and Hearing Center recently updated their student clinician uniforms! EXCITING UPDATE :
“I truly love the program, that is why I keep coming back” -Anonymous client
The Molloy University Speech, Language, and Hearing Center continues to proudly serve a large population of infants through the elderly, seeing over 100 clients per week at the speech center, FCA, Headstart, and via telepractice. Currently, the Center has also had a record number of 25 students participating in LSVT training and are currently in the process of getting certified. We also have two clinical educators, Professor Vizcarrondo and Professor Langevin, trained in LSVT. This will allow students at the clinic to provide more intense services to clients with Parkinson’s disease. The Speech, Language, and Hearing Center now have new uniforms for the students who are working in the clinic. We are thrilled to announce that the Center has participated in Rockville Center’s “Eat, Shop, Rock” street fair this summer for the first time. Their students and faculty offered complimentary hearing, speech, and language screenings. When asked her hope for the future, Professor Ascher, the Director of the Molloy University Speech, Language, and Hearing Center, hopes to have more aphasia groups and to collaborate with the clinical mental health department for support groups.

MELISSA PETERS YANG, MS, CCC-SLP, TSSLD
Melissa Yang is a Molloy University graduate, speech-language pathologist, certified lactation counselor, and dedicated healthcare professional based in Los Angeles. She began her career working as both a speech-language pathologist and feeding therapist, gaining hands-on experience in homes and clinical settings across the city. Motivated by a passion for family- centered care, she went on to start her own in-home private practice, Speak Live Play, which offers speech, feeding, occupational, and physical therapy services. In addition to seeing patients through Speak Live Play, Melissa also serves as Manager of Rehabilitation Services at St. John’s Providence Hospital, where she leads a multidisciplinary team committed to excellence in patient care. Melissa was featured in the NY Times in 2020 for her work during the COVID pandemic.
EMILY ZERVAS M.S. CCC-SLP TSSLD
Emily Zervas, MS SLP 2024, is one of only two M.S. SLP students to participate twice in the international service- learning experience in Jamaica W.I. She also piloted our international telepractice program in Jamaica. She describes this as one of her most memorable Molloy experiences as she planned and executed weekly virtual sessions to support the communication of a 4-year-old neurodivergent client, and the client’s family. After graduation, Emily completed her clinical fellowship as an Early Intervention home care therapist with the North Shore Center for Speech, Language, and Swallowing Disorders. She worked with multiple families across Nassau County, conducting speech, language, and feeding assessments for children aged 1 to 3 years with communication and feeding and swallowing difficulties. She provided direct, play-based therapy using a family-centered approach to best support each child’s unique needs and individualized goals. During this time, Emily also presented with faculty and fellow alumni at the 2025 Annual Convention of the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), held in Seattle, Washington.
Upon earning her ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and New York State SLP licensure, Emily spent the summer working at Camp ANCHOR, a year-round program for children and adults with special needs, where she was involved since 2014. She had the absolute pleasure of welcoming 17 new campers, ages 9 to 12, many of whom were nonspeaking and used AAC devices. Working in this environment further deepened her passion for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Most recently, Emily began a full-time position as a speech-language pathologist at the Manhattan Behavioral Center (MBC), a transdisciplinary center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She serves students with autism, and each student receives individualized services from a variety of disciplines. Emily reports her “ongoing interest in AAC, first sparked during Molloy’s clinical and AAC course experiences, continues to inspire my work as I help clients find their voice through a variety of communication modalities. I am endlessly grateful for the foundation Molloy provided; its faculty, clinical experiences, and supportive community truly set me on the path to a rewarding and meaningful career.”
PROFFESSOR LISSETTE VIZCARRONDO M.S., CCC-SLP
Professor Lissette K. Vizcarrondo MS CCC-SLP is the Clinical Coordinator for the Graduate SLP Program. I received my B.A in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from CUNY Brooklyn College in 2018, and graduated from Molloy College with my MS in Speech Language Pathology in 2020- Go Lions!! Once I graduated, I jumped straight into an SNF during the COVID Pandemic. Being a new clinician during the pandemic was very difficult but I truly believe it helped shape my clinician judgement! Working with adults is something I have always known I wanted to do. I started observing FEES in the 11th and 12th grade through a program at my High School. I enjoyed spending my afternoons at South Nassau Hospital with different patients and observing the Supervising SLP and the way she taught her graduate interns. Fast forwarding to the Fall Semester of 2023, I began working as a Clinical Educator at Molloy University and participated in the Bethany House Program with the adult population. Back then, little did I know.. that opportunity opened many doors for me, and helped pave the path I walk today at Molloy. I later was asked to participate in the Jamaica Service Trip, then received the opportunity to become a Clinical Educator at the SLHC, where I would supervise the Jamaica Telehealth sessions. Not long after that did I receive the incredible opportunity to become the Clinical Coordinator for the MS Program. When I was a student, I always admired and looked up to all of my professors and clinical educators, I loved all of the feedback I could get! Now.. Being able to work side by side with them is truly an amazing experience. We are able to collaborate in so many ways and are consonantly learning from eachother. Fun Fact - As a student, she was s scheduled to go on the Jamaica Service Trip TWICE and was not able to due to unforseen circumstances. Looking back, I would have never thought I would be the Clinical Educator responsible for the Telehealth Clients we receive through the trip or go on the trip twice as a Clinical Educator rather than a student clinician. I think the younger version of me would be proud of who I am today.
Molloy University NSSLHA Chapter 2024-2025
NSSLHA is acknowledged by ASHA as the national student organization studying communication sciences and disorders. The most recent president of Molloy University’s NSSLHA, Grainne Gattis, discussed her experience. She believes that being the president of Molloy’s NSSLHA chapter has been rewarding. She has been given opportunities to collaborate with many other students, club leaders, Molloy professors, and other NSSLHA and ASHA members nationwide. Grainne advocated for the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders within Molloy’s community. She expressed, “It’s brought me so much joy to be able to meet so many new people in ways I never would have expected. This position has also opened my eyes to how much learning and advocacy go beyond the classroom and clinical settings. I’m so proud of this chapter’s achievements, especially after earning Bronze status last school year, and being recognized on a national level.” Grainne is very excited about the 2025-2026 school year. She is aiming to involve more students in Molloy’s NSSLHA chapter, and is this year working with co-president Kelly Top-Vasquez to meet this goal. Molloy NSSLHA held its first Fall 2025 meeting on Friday, September 5th. Students are encouraged to check the Molloy Life website to join and to check emails for member updates.

MOLLOY UNIVERSITY’S FOURTH ANNUAL COMMUNICATION SCIENCES AND DISORDERS CONVENTION: THE SCIENCE OF READING AND FAMILY SUPPORT PRACTICES Beginning in 2022, Molloy CSD began supplementing its continuing education offerings with an annual convention each spring. The convention design allows for multiple program offerings throughout the day designed to appeal to a diverse group of SLP’s who are able to attend either virtually or in person. All offerings are consistent with the year’s theme and focused on accessible and evidence-based practices. The convention topics and instruction levels vary for both practicing clinicians and students, and provide students who may not have the opportunity to attend larger conventions, the convention experience on a smaller scale. Each year a Career Fair is also offered for additional student networking.
This year’s convention will be Friday, March 7, 2025. Save the date and let us know if you are interested in being a convention sponsor!
LISHA Joan Fox Award
Each year the Long Island Speech, Language and Hearing Association (LISHA) invites local graduate programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders to submit their program’s nominee to receive the Joan Fox Award. The award nominees are chosen in recognition of outstanding scholarship and service to the speech, language and hearing professions. Historically and through spring of 2023, each program’s nominee received award recognition by LISHA. Beginning in 2024, only two nominees from each SLP master’s program were chosen by LISHA to receive formal recognition. We are very proud to say that our 2024 Molloy nominee, Victoria LaCascia was selected as one of only two SLP program recipients by LISHA. Please read below to learn more about Victoria’s accomplishments at Molloy and beyond.
Victoria LaCascia
Victoria is currently completing her clinical fellowship year at Commack Speech and Language Disorders, where she treats preschool aged children with speech sound disorders and language disorders.
