moving to Surf Lifesaving where she became double World Champion and World Record holder, before finally rowing internationally for Great Britain many times. Rebecca had an unbelievable amount of passion, and with that she made an incredible impact at Dulwich. Her encouragement led to the improvement of individual students, regardless of their ability and aspirations, and her judicious yet heartfelt praise, along with infectious enthusiasm, resonated with pupils to help them achieve their goals. She gained numerous wins for her squads on the pitch and in the pool at Dulwich, and on the

river in Putney, before being appointed Assistant Head of Rowing at Sir William Perkins in September 2014. Rebecca’s experiences as an elite athlete fashioned her remarkable self-discipline and the ability to perform under pressure, and in January 2015 she was deservedly selected for the Women’s Welsh Rugby team, with whom, at the time of writing, she has gained three caps. Her growing list of accomplishments comes as no surprise but invites considerable admiration; we wish her the very best of luck in her future as an athlete and a teacher. She is sorely missed.

T om Woudhuysen OA returned to the College, this time as a member of teaching staff, in September 2011. From the outset, Tom, who had completed his training through the Teach First scheme in South Croydon, brought ingenuity and energy to all of his lessons. He discovered a particular passion for the Liberal Welfare Reforms of the early 20th Century and married this to his excellent Politics teaching – a subject he had never taught before. Tom’s approach was characterised by his willingness to try the unorthodox in his attempts to help boys reach their potential, putting on revision classes in the half-term holidays, for example.

The weekends rarely found Tom sitting idly either. Indeed, his commitment to the sporting life of the College was quite outstanding, coaching cricket, football and, particularly, rugby teams to an excellent level. He was also a passionate Middle School tutor and helped to introduce the now much-expanded mentoring scheme into this part of the school. Tom will be missed by the History department and by those boys he taught and coached. He left the College in the summer of 2014 to take up an MA at UCL, from where he will take up the post of Head of History at Hampstead School from September 2015.

K evin joined as Master in Charge of Cricket in January 2012 and also taught PE, Games and Year 9 Geography. His energy and passion for sport was evident in all that he did, and he was someone who always had the boys’ best interests at heart. He quickly established himself as a trusted and reliable member of staff who was a source of good advice given his wealth of experience as a Senior House Master at Kings Ely, where he also ran rugby and cricket programmes. ‘Shawsy’, as he became affectionately known, also coached rugby and football to a high level and won Rugby Coach of the Year following his U14 As unbeaten season. He ran tours to Dubai, Barbados, St Kitts & Nevis during his M iriam joined Dulwich as an NQT in September 2012. She quickly established herself as an excellent classroom teacher, passionate about Chinese and making the language accessible to non- native learners. She showed particular skill in teaching techniques that engaged the boys and encouraged their active learning, often through friendly competition, in what can be a challenging language. Outside the classroom, Miriam was keen to promote and raise the profile of Chinese learning and took an active role in, among other things, organising trips to Chinese film days at the British Film Institute, leading a day of teaching workshops and cultural events at the Isle of Sheppey and helping to run the Founder’s Day events at the College – unfortunately, her plans for an incognito appearance at the latter disguised as a Beijing Opera star never quite came to fruition before she moved on from Dulwich! Her contribution to the College’s trips programme was extensive. On the China trip in 2014, Miriam’s support

time at Dulwich and these epitomised his dedication to improving the boys’ experience of life through sport. Kevin, his wife Heather, and daughters, Lucy, Chloe and Sarah were all extremely proud to be associated with Dulwich College and couldn’t turn down the opportunity of a lifetime to experience the ex-pat lifestyle when Kevin was offered the role of Director of Sport at Dulwich College Singapore. Kevin and his whole family will be sorely missed, especially on Dusters evenings and sunny Saturday afternoons watching the first XI – although our departmental sun screen budget will be vastly reduced, as will the likelihood of games being called off during the Cricket season.

Victoria Burrill

V icky joined the Junior School on September 2011 as a Year 5 Form Tutor. It quickly became apparent that she was a teacher with enormous energy and commitment both to the pastoral care and academic development of the pupils in her form. She proved lively, innovative and forward-thinking, broadening the pupil’s experiences at every opportunity. One of her great passions was Philosophy for Children, which she introduced, leading both pupils and staff on a voyage of discovery where questions were answered with questions and brains had to be encouraged to think outside the box. Keen to take on responsibility, Vicky became Head of English and Head of Year 5 and ran both with equal efficiency, energy and enthusiasm. She did much to promote both creative writing and reading in the Junior School, working closely with Hazel Forbes on reading initiatives, submitting pupils’ stories for national competitions and constantly considering

ways to inspire the boys to raise their game. Vicky’s energy was also channelled into the co-curricular programme where one of her greatest contributions was co-directing the Year 6 production for three years. Anyone who saw Treasure Island , Forbidden Planet or Bugsy Malone will appreciate her huge input into each of them. Looking for a new challenge, she introduced the Junior Alleynian which from the start was a wonderful reflection of life in the Junior School produced to a professional standard. But amid this whirlwind of activity Vicky also enjoyed the simple life, declaring once on her return from the Field Centre in Wales, ‘That’s the best thing I’ve ever done as a teacher.’ Sadly for us, Vicky is not going to run the Field Centre but leaving to teach at Newton Prep, where the treetops in Battersea Park may have to suffice. Vicky was admired as a totally professional dedicated

was invaluable as she helped guide 24 Middle Schools boys around China. Her contributions to the French Lower School trip to Vic-sur-Cère and to Duke of Edinburgh trips closer to home were also very much appreciated. As Middle School Charities Coordinator, Miriam also made an enormous contribution to the College’s charity fundraising efforts. In this role, she helped raise awareness among boys of the benefits of charitable giving, helping facilitate campaigns that were enjoyable and beneficial in all respects. Always ready to rise to a challenge, Miriam put her little-known singing talents to the test under the critical eyes of a full house in the Edward Alleyn Theatre when she sang a duet of ‘A Whole New World’ (from Disney’s Aladdin ) in the Teacher’s Karaoke event. As a wonderful and talented colleague to work with, we will really miss Miriam at Dulwich. We wish her all the very best in her role as Head of Chinese in Anglo European School in Ingatestone, where I am sure she will go from strength to strength.

teacher and will be remembered as a wonderful colleague and friend by the Junior School team.

R ebecca joined the Dulwich College PE and Games Department in September 2011. Arriving at the College offering a variety of sports (Rowing, ugby and Swimming being her main specialities), it quickly became apparent that she was a teacher with

enormous energy, commitment and a huge range of interests. Alongside her teaching, Rebecca completed her GTP in Physical Education at Dulwich in 2011. Her sporting career spanned more than 20 years, first as a national-level swimmer competing for Wales, then
