Antonia Burrows

Andy Threadgould

A ntonia taught across both the Economics and Politics departments for one year. She brought a compelling combination of fierce intellectual powers forged by her PPE degree at Oxford, and a highly organised and charismatic classroom presence developed over two years with the Teach First programme. She was a supportive tutor in Year 9, where she also taught Wellbeing to her form, and she founded the PPE Society

to give boys in both the Upper and Middle Schools the opportunity to discuss and debate topical and controversial issues. Antonia made the most of her ‘gap year’ with us before heading abroad with her partner as he took up a post with the Foreign Office. She was already learning Mandarin ahead of their departure, and SE21’s loss will be Taiwan’s gain. We wish them both well.

Saul Taylor

Chris Ottewill

E ducated first in Cramlington, Northumberland, and then the University of Leeds, followed by seven years teaching at St Bees School, Cumbria, Saul’s move south to Dulwich in the summer of 2014 was partly because of his wife’s career but just as much, as indicated on his letter of application, for a ‘lifestyle change’. Saul quickly adapted to the change in latitude, forming good relationships with his groups at the College, who appreciated his thorough teaching style combined and his compassionate nature. Saul also helped with the Middle School Mathematics Society, running a Year 10 extension class every week, plus regular help sessions

for Years 7 and 11. Outside of the classroom, Saul took responsibility for the Under 16 Badminton squad, turning up to training sessions and helping with matches over the year. However, in his last year at St Bees, Saul had been second in charge of the Mathematics department and the desire to return to having some responsibilities beyond teaching was too much to resist. Consequently, Saul now leaves us to take on extra responsibilities in the Mathematics Department at Francis Holland School. I know that all of the department here wish him all the very best in his new job and hope that he takes some good memories with him from his time at the College.
