ALTERNATIVE THINKING SOCIETY

Hauras Amin (Year 12), James Todd (Year 12), Oskar Harhalakis (Year 12), Yusuf Tarajia (Year 12)

T he idea to have an alternative thinking society arose due to a joint realisation about the gap in the market of school societies. Whilst there were several societies that directly extend from academic subjects, we believed that there wasn’t a society that teaches a much- needed value in the today’s world: scepticism. These days, it is essential that we reassess the facts that are given to us, or indeed the reasons why things are the way they are. This year, the society has been very well attended, with an average turnout of around 30 pupils per session, largely down to the excellent presentational skills of our speakers and the wide variety of topics that we have analysed. We have broken down and looked

closely at significant cultural and scientific landmarks in human history, as well as some more trivial topics such as the socioeconomic impact of Santa. After the successes of this year, we are planning external speakers and looking forward to designing and distributing an official Alternative Thinking Tie. It is very important to us that the society continues in the years to come and so we will be looking for at least one present member of the society to carry the torch once we have moved on.

A new week-long initiative in November 2014 brought together Art, Drama, Music and Design Technology in a series of events and activities to draw out and showcase boys’ creative talents: Dulwich Creative. Every pupil in the school, from DUCKS to Year 13, was involved in drawing and sculpting and hearing or seeing artists, who included BP Portrait Award-winning

painter Craig Wylie, street artist Christiaan Nagel and sculptor Ben Woodeson, at work. The whole week was dedicated to the memory of Saagar Naresh (OA 2006-2012), a committed and creative Alleynian who contributed generously to every aspect of College life. Older boys learned about careers in the creative arts, hearing from speakers such as photographer David Clerihew, production designer Patrick Watson, Academy Award-winning producer of Shakespeare in Love David Parfitt, and Technical Director of the National Theatre Katrina Gilroy. A key element of creativity during the week came from the idea of hijacking. Spaces, objects and the College intranet were hijacked; even the timetable was hijacked when, for 15 minutes across the whole school, every pupil and member of staff produced a line drawing. Over the course of the week, 1,600 clay faces were also fashioned to form a massive art installation celebrating the diversity and individuality of each student. These were then displayed in The Store, a room hijacked as a new exhibition and performance space. In addition, there were music recitals, public rehearsals, dramatic performances, poetry readings, artistic hijackings and fascinating expeditions, all of which engaged the whole College community. The week culminated on the Friday evening with the opening night of the Lower School production of Hiawatha and the grand opening of The Store, where Clare Twomey of the Craft Council gave a keynote address.
