Revisit the Big Book Show the big book cover. Today we are going to reread the book Thank You, Omu! Use the Scout Stick Puppet. Scout likes Thank You, Omu! because he enjoys stories about people who live in cities. Share the Guiding Question There is a question I want you to think about as we read. We will talk about it after we read. Ready? Who are some of the people in Omu’s community? Read-Aloud: Focus on Comprehension Read aloud the book and the Day 3 prompts. Use Equity Sticks to choose children to answer questions. pages 2–3 Omu seasoned and stirred her stew. Revisit stirred Vocabulary Card. What did she use to stir her stew? What does seasoned mean? pages 6–7 When Omu told the little boy the delicious smell was stew, he

said, “Mmmmm. Stew! That sure sounds yummy!” What did Omu think the boy wanted? Did she make an inference about what the boy wanted? Revisit the MI Strategy Card. pages 14–15 Omu asked the police officer, “Would you like some?” and the police officer nodded. When you nod your head up and down, do you mean yes or no? Let’s all nod. pages 18–19 “Mr. Hot Dog Vendor!” Omu exclaimed when she saw the hot dog vendor standing at her door. Revisit exclaimed Vocabulary Card. Why do you think Omu exclaims when she opens her door? Do you think she knew the hot dog vendor was coming? Who can tell me what a hot dog vendor does? pages 22–23 Look at the pictures on these pages. Can you name all of the different people you see? Talk About It Let’s turn and talk about the guiding question. Who are some of the people in Omu’s community?

Give a moment for Turn and Talk . Then, pick 2–3 children with Equity Sticks to share responses. Possible responses: • The little boy • The police officer • The hot dog vendor Support 1 Is there a police officer or a firefighter in Omu’s community? 3 There is a police officer in Omu’s community. 2 There is a police officer in Omu’s c___________ (community).

Challenge Who are the people in our school community? Interactive Writing Share a pen with children as you work together to write about the people in Omu’s community, inviting children to add end punctuation.

Child Development: Multilingual Learners Multilingual learners will often need help with culturally-specific concepts. In this book, children may be unfamiliar with concepts such as living in an apartment building, a hot dog vendor, and a cab driver. Introduce children to the setting using pages (pages 2–5). Discuss what they see in each block and what the illustrations are made of.
