Share the Big Chart of Big Ideas Show the Big Chart 2.3.4. This week we are going to read Super Jobs . It is a poster that gives us information. We call it an informational poster. Let’s say that! Use the Scout Stick Puppet. Scout loves to look at posters! He wants to learn new information about people in our community. Connect the Texts Thank You, Omu! and Super Jobs show us people who help us. Let’s see if we can find any connections between the two. Show Thank You, Omu! book cover. Revisit the Concept Question As we read the Big Chart, let’s think about how it connects to this week’s concept question:

Who are the people who help in our community? Close-Read: Connect to Helpers Read aloud the back of the Big Chart. Then use these prompts to discuss. Use Equity Sticks during reading to pick children to answer questions. Doctor Who can tell me the two reasons why we visit a doctor? Revisit doctor Vocabulary Card. Plumber Who can point to the plumber? What is the plumber doing? How do plumbers help us? What do they fix? Baker What kinds of foods does a baker make? Have you ever made cookies? A cake? Let’s pretend we are rolling dough on a counter.

Firefighter How do firefighters help us? How do they keep us safe? Revisit firefighter Vocabulary Card. Show pages 12–13 of the book. How does a police officer keep us safe? Extended Play Have children choose the job of a community helper that they would like to do. Then have them draw a picture of that job. Help children add labels to their drawings. Ask volunteers to tell the rest of the class about their drawing and how that job helps the community. Guided Writing Provide a writing prompt about community helpers and give ongoing feedback as children draw and write in response to the prompt.

Child Development: Social Studies Preschool children learn social studies concepts by observing and discussing their surroundings: homes, banks, libraries, fire stations, playgrounds, parks, and stores. Encourage children to compare their neighborhood to those in books, taking note of similarities and differences.
