PROJECT

THE EWART BUILDING, BELFAST

G 4S Fire & Security Systems (UK) was contracted by AEM for the supply and installation of fire detection and security systems for The Ewart Building. To offer guaranteed protection for one of Belfast’s landmarks, the challenge was providing an innovative technology integrated solution, combined with flexibility and ease of extension for tenant floor fit-out works. The products chosen by G4S to create a comprehensive safety solution included a fire detection system and a voice alarm system both by Honeywell GENT, a Honeywell Galaxy intruder alarm system, a Baldwin Boxall disabled refuge system, an Assisted Toilet Alarm System by Quantec, and a C-Cure access control system. G4S’s collaboration with Caldwell Consulting, which designed the safety system, was essential to guarantee a smooth installation. “Early detailed design by Caldwell Consulting safeguarded a resilient cabling infrastructure for the core building fire and voice alarm TEAMWORK AND SOLID WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WERE CRUCIAL TO SUPPLY AND INSTALL THE FIRE DETECTION AND SECURITY SOLUTIONS AT THE EWART... systems,” G4S Fire & Security Systems (UK) Account Director James Beattie explained. “This afforded a dynamic and efficient method of extending these systems into tenant fit-out floors and ensured the fire strategy for the building could be maintained.” The main challenge faced by G4S was the lift destination integration between the access control system and the lifts. Once more, innovation was key, and the company used an integrated solution that makes remote management of physical access to the required floor both secure and seamless. G4S was delighted to work on such a high-profile project. Teamwork and solid working relationships in the industry were critical to successful project delivery. “It’s great to continue our long-established working relationship with both McAleer & Rushe and Caldwell Consulting,” James said. “G4S has considerable experience in the fire and security industry, and it is a fitting tribute that the company was selected by AEM as the main fire and security contractor

for one of Northern Ireland’s biggest office development projects. Our Project Engineers Stuart Russell (Fire) and Donal Rankin (Security) worked closely with Steven Magill (AEM) to ensure we remain a trusted supply chain partner for further projects with the company.” The Ewart Building also celebrated another long-lasting partnership, this time with one of the main manufacturers. G4S is one of only eight Gent Elite Technology Centres within the Gent 24 network, a range of companies selected due to their ability to demonstrate considerable technical ability and successful market development in working with the manufacturer. “We are very proud of our partnership with all of our manufacturers and suppliers, particularly with Gent, which spans nearly three decades,” James commented. “G4S is the original systems integrator and has supplied Gent equipment since the 1980s, carrying out design, installation, commissioning and maintenance operations to the highest standard of workmanship.”
