Maternal a term that is becoming a widely used mar - keting tool across the breed. What is Maternal? Maternal is best described as having the natural ability to sense and meet the needs of a new-born calf, while maintaing her own body and breeding back on time. When we think of maternally bred cows what are you looking for while observing that first calf heifer, who just laid down and had her first calf? Did she get up right away? Is she licking and nudging her newborn to get up? Depending on the time of year you calve, it may be very important for the cows to get them calves mov - ing, so they dont freeze to the frozen ground. At Brown Angus Ranch fertility is one thing we can measure with calving intervals. Most of these other traits or attitudes are visually inspected at birth or during the summer months. Some cattle tend to their calf from birth through weaning while others just graze and take care of themselves.

Cow sense. Well I guess you could say common sense! Cattle that exhibit the abililties required to raise a calf from birth to weaning all while doing it at average or above have cow sense. It takes more then you think to get calves to weaning. A good maternally bred cow will stand for her calf to make sure they get a full belly and enough collostrum to keep them healthy through - out their growing life. We have seen it first hand! A cow that doesnt nurture its calf at birth will rarely ever bring in a big stout healthy calf come fall. 2 Year old heifer udder quality!
