Points and Problems 1. "In the beginning" (Gen. 1:1). These three English words come from one word in the Hebrew, namely, “bereshith.” This one word has given the book of Genesis its name. It is the book of beginnings. The genesis or germ of every leading fact, truth and revelation is found in this book. It is the seed-plot of future manifes tation. List the beginnings recorded in Genesis. 2. "In the beginning God" (1:1). This is the pivotal fact of the uni verse. All truth revolves about it. Only as man is properly related to this fact can he be said to be in the truth. God was first in creation. This is seen in, the verse before us. See also John 1:3. God was also first in redemption, for Christ was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. See Rev. 13:8. Then God was first in revelation. Read Heb. 1:1-2. The great practical question that faces each individual is this, "Is God first in my life?" 3. "And the earth was without form, and void" (1:2). A problem at once arises at this poin(. How did the earth get into this condition? It should be noted that nothing is said about the heavens being formless and void, only the earth. Surely God did not create the earth like this. His work is per fect as Deut. 32:3, 4 teaches us, “As cribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect." Furthermore, Isa. 45:18 (R.V.) informs us that God did not create the world a waste. The word translated “waste" is the same word as that used in Gen. 1:2 and translated “without form” or “waste.” Some great catas trophe must have occurred between the first and second verses of Genesis. Possibly this judgment was in con nection with the casting of Satan and his emissaries out of heaven. See Ezek. 28:12-15 and Isa. 14:9-15. The verb “was” in the first part of verse 2 may be translated “became” even as it is in other places in the Old Testa ment. For instance, we read of Lot’s wife that “she became (was) a pillar of salt” (Gen. 19:26). This rendering harmonizes perfectly with the catas trophe idea. 4. "And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good" (1:31). The making here does not refer to the original creation. The Hebrew word for made is “asah” which means to make out of some thing as the carpenter makes a house out of materials at hand. The He brew word for the original creation is “ bara,” to make out of nothing. What God did during the so-called six days of creation was to restore the chaotic earth (v. 2) into a suitable place for man to dwell. God looked upon what He accomplished and was pleased.
