Last year we saw the sector’s critical view of the lack of departmental assistance. Since that data was captured, Queensland has experienced a change in Government which has brought a 12 point increase in sentiment, returning it to neutrality. Mineral explorers are the most encouraged by the department, with a net positive outlook on this category. Respondents acknowledged the Queensland Critical Minerals Strategy as a helpful initiative, stating: “The Queensland CM Strategy gave a clear focus on the specific areas that Queensland will focus on in the future. This aligned with our internal company strategy and focus on critical minerals.” Coal and petroleum respondents still felt departmental support was lacking, highlighting an area for improvement.

Over the last 3 years there has been continuous improvement in the industry perception of its social license to operate. It remains slightly negative, contributing to the trend seen throughout the Scorecard’s history that social license requirements can be restrictive to explorer’s operations. Unsurprisingly coal explorers feel the challenge of community perception the strongest compared to petroleum and mineral explorers. Public trust in the resources sector is on the rise, with 69% of Queenslanders viewing mining as important 4 . Strengthening the industry’s social licence is seen by CEOs as the greatest opportunity for growth over the next five years.
