In recent years, the chronic levels of prescription, use, and abuse of opioids in the Unit- ed States has reached dramatically high levels. Since 2000, the age-adjusted drug over- dose death rate has more than doubled. In 2019, 70% of drug overdose deaths involved an opioid of some form. In addition to this tremendous impact on public health, the U.S Council of Economic Advisors also estimates “the total economic cost of the opi- oid epidemic to be $700 billion – 3.4% of total GDP in 2018.” Further exacerbated by societal issues surrounding the pandemic, the opioid crisis is quickly emerging as one of the biggest health events of the century.
