LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The year 2022 marked the beginning of the slow return to normalcy – both for St. Vincent de Paul and our larger community – following the height of the COVID pandemic. Yet it was not, and still is not, a return to the “normal” conditions we had pre-pandemic. The impacts on the economy, most particularly the significant increase in inflation, have had a lingering effect on our communities and our most vulnerable neighbors. This has made our vital services – in the critical areas of Hunger, Housing and Health – more needed than ever. I am extremely grateful for the dedicated staff, and especially our thousands of volunteers and members, for continuing to provide exemplary service to more than 150,000 of our fellow Georgians last year. This significant demand for assistance came at a time when our sources of funding also began to return to “normal.” Significant government assistance funds, readily available at the height of COVID, began to diminish. Fortunately, we have been blessed by incredible donors – individuals, corporations and foundations – that have answered the call and filled our hands with gifts for those in need. I am extremely appreciative of all of you who have entrusted us with funds. I can assure you that we all take that responsibility seriously. Last year was also the beginning of St. Vincent de Paul getting back to “normal” in the way we deliver our services. Our mission is to provide person-to-person assistance to our neighbors, through personal encounters, in most cases Home Visits. We were obviously unable to do this during the initial surge of COVID and through several variations that followed. So, we improvised and continued to deliver services with compassion and a personal commitment to understanding our neighbors’ needs. Fortunately, we are now able to meet personally with our neighbors again. This is so important to who we are and what we do. We are not assisting the needy as a charity, but as neighbors helping neighbors. Going to visit our friends in need is as rewarding for our Vincentian volunteers as it is helpful for those we serve. We go as the hands and feet of Christ, providing Help and Hope. But we also see the face of Christ in our suffering neighbors. So, I would also like to express my gratitude for the thousands of families that have allowed us to come into their homes and serve them. As we progress in 2023, we continue to greatly expand our Hunger, Housing and Health services. The activity of our St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy – the only statewide charitable pharmacy in Georgia – is on pace to increase over 50% from 2022, providing more than 15,000 life-saving prescriptions. Our Motel to Home program will secure permanent, stable housing for more than 200 families this year, nearly quadrupling from last year. And the volume of food distributed from our Client Choice food pantry in Chamblee has more than tripled just since the beginning of 2023. We continue to meet the challenge of our “new normal,” thanks to the commitment of our Vincentian volunteers throughout our 73 chapters across the state, the support of incredible donors who share our mission, community volunteers and the passion of our incredible staff and Board. Thanks to all of you for making it possible for us to provide Help and Hope to our neighbors. With gratitude,

Mike Mies, Executive Director St. Vincent de Paul Georgia

HOUSING St. Vincent de Paul Georgia increases housing stability through eviction prevention, rehousing and transitional housing programs and housing services for at-risk individuals and families.

STABLE HOUSING IS A KEY DETERMINANT IN ACHIEVING AND MAINTAINING SELF-SUFFICIENCY FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES.

• In Georgia, 542,000 renters – 23% of all renters in the state – are not caught up on rent. • In Georgia, 2,736,000 adults – 36% of all adults in the state – have difficulty covering basic household expenses. • Low-income households are more likely than other renters to sacrifice other necessities like healthy food and healthcare to pay the rent and to experience unstable housing situations like evictions. • People who are in unstable housing situations such as those who need to move multiple times in a year or have difficulty paying rent face poorer health outcomes than people with stable housing.

HOW WE INCREASE HOUSING STABILITY

EMERGENCY RENT, MORTGAGE AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE St. Vincent de Paul Georgia provides emergency financial assistance for rent, mortgage and utilities to individuals and families at risk of eviction who meet eligibility and income criteria. MOTEL TO HOME Motel To Home is a comprehensive rehousing program designed to help individuals and families move from extended-stay motels into stable housing. Extended-stay motels have become the homeless shelters of the suburbs for many families. Even though most of them are working full-time, they often have no other alternative after experiencing an eviction because most property owners will not rent to a tenant with an eviction record. They move in thinking it will be a temporary solution, but become trapped as high daily and weekly fees and local motel taxes leave them little money to save for paying off debt or paying deposits on a new apartment. TRANSITIONAL HOUSING House of Dreams House of Dreams is a Transitional Housing program for homeless women without children who are willing and able to change their own lives and become self-sufficient. Located in Smyrna, GA, House of Dreams provides shelter, life and work skills classes, job assistance and more. St. Michael’s House St. Michael’s House is a Transitional Housing program for homeless women with young children who are willing and able to change their lives and become self-sufficient. Located in Woodstock, GA, St. Michael’s House provides shelter, meals, employment assistance, financial education classes and more. TEMPORARY HOUSING St. Vincent de Paul Georgia provides temporary housing in hotels or shelters and assistance with moving or storage of personal items when eviction cannot be avoided. HOUSING REFERRALS + RESOURCES St. Vincent de Paul Georgia provides referrals to partner agencies for housing services and resources such as housing counseling, tenant legal aid, shelters, homeless assistance and more.

@svdpgeorgia

HUNGER St. Vincent de Paul Georgia creates access to food to reduce food insecurity through food pantries, food recovery and distribution, nutrition education and more to ensure individuals and families in Georgia have food on the table and do not go hungry. ACCESS TO FOOD IS A KEY DETERMINANT OF HOUSEHOLD STABILITY FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. Hunger can affect people from all walks of life. Many Georgians are one job loss or medical crisis away from food insecurity. • More than 335,720 children in Georgia - 1 in 8 - are food insecure. • In Georgia, 1,156,660 people - 1 in 9 - are facing hunger. • Children and seniors are at greatest risk of food insecurity in Georgia. • The working poor, veterans and Georgians who live outside metro Atlanta are also at higher risk of food insecurity.

HOW WE FIGHT HUNGER

FOOD PANTRIES St. Vincent de Paul Georgia’s 40 food pantries across the state, including several Client-Choice Food Pantries, provide food assistance to 50,000+ food insecure individuals per year. St. Vincent de Paul Georgia promotes a Client-Choice model with neighbors in need receiving food assistance by selecting the food they want at no-cost, choosing fresh produce, meat, baked goods and non-perishables. This Client-Choice model not only reduces food waste from unwanted food, but also reinforces the dignity of each person – a fundamental tenet of St. Vincent de Paul Georgia. TEACHING KITCHEN + NUTRITION EDUCATION The innovative St. Vincent de Paul Georgia Teaching Kitchen features semi- commercial, energy-efficient appliances in a classroom-style space to provide nutrition education, cooking demonstrations and classes on healthy eating, feeding a family on a budget, cooking skills and more. Participants are able to prepare their own food with supplies from St. Vincent de Paul Georgia’s Client-Choice Food Pantry and take home nutritious prepared meals. FOOD RECOVERY + DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM St. Vincent de Paul Georgia’s Food Recovery + Distribution Program is essential for stocking our food pantries. Thanks to partnerships with Atlanta Community Food Bank, HOPE Atlanta, Second Helpings, the Veterans Administration and Open Hand Atlanta, our program recovers food from grocery retail partners like Kroger, ALDI, Publix and Sam’s Club. This includes fresh produce, meat, baked goods and non-perishables. We use this recovered food to stock our 40 food pantries statewide. Each month, the Food Recovery + Distribution Program recovers over 59,000+ pounds of food, preventing millions of dollars in food waste per year. St. Vincent de Paul Georgia operates a large warehouse at our Community Support Center in Chamblee complete with industrial walk-in refrigerators and freezers, storage and sorting areas, and maintains a fleet of trucks and experienced drivers on staff for program operation and service delivery. SNAP BENEFITS ASSISTANCE St. Vincent de Paul Georgia provides Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits eligibility screening and enrollment assistance to low-income individuals and families to ensure that at-risk and vulnerable households have access to sufficient nutritious, healthy food and do not go hungry.

Morning of Hope provided powerful proof of why hope matters for individuals and families in poverty, amplifies voices of hope and highlights exceptional work being done to help those in need and build communities of hope in Georgia. All proceeds benefited critically-needed programs and services that provide Help and Hope to our neighbors in need.
