L’Orignal Old Jail summer program

Opened in 1825, the L’Orignal jail was the oldest prison in service in Ontario’s justice systemuntil its closure in 1998. Now a museum and interpretive centre, the L’Orignal Old Jail is open for its 8 th season, from June 1 until Labour Day in September, every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Summer students will conduct bilingual tours and provide tourist information on the area and local activities. The tours offer the opportunity to see and experience the narrow vaulted cells whose walls stood witness to prisoners’ sorrows and secrets during its 175 years of operation. As well, learn about the five hangings that occurred in the L’Orignal Old Jail. During the last seven years, the L’Orignal Old Jail has had close to 15,000 visitors. Every year, the co-ordinator, members of the L’Orignal Old Jail committee and the enthusiastic guides have organized new exhibits and displays about the Old Jail and the history of the area.
