5. Presentation of educational research at regional meetings and in peer reviewed journals. While educational research is encouraged, it is recognized that funding sources for research in medical education are limited; therefore, extramural funding is considered an asset, but not a requirement for promotion. 6. Participation on a curriculum committee or other education-related committees. 7. Participation in the development of educational policy at the local level. 8. Recognition as a role model and mentor for students and trainees. 9. In addition, where applicable, appointment or promotion to Associate Professor is based on the applicant's ability to provide excellent patient care according to the standards set by the candidate's department. The individual should be developing expertise in his/her selected field of clinical specialty and should be able to handle most routine clinical situations. Evaluations from the candidate's peers, colleagues, division chief and department director should reflect the individual's clinical skills. In addition, appointment or promotion in a basic science department should include research or administrative functions set by the candidate's department. Participation in education research may be either as an independent investigator or as a collaborator in an establishedprogram. PROFESSOR Candidates for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Associate Professor. Appointment or promotion to Professor is reserved for distinguished members of the faculty in recognition of distinctive local, regional and national achievements in teaching. Advancement recognizes a continued and sustained achievement in the categories listed at Associate Professor, but with the addition of significant evidence that the candidate has assuming leadership roles in the teaching and mentoring programs. Examples include: 1. Ongoing recognition as an excellent teacher/mentor of students, residents, fellows, faculty or contributing medical education participants as documented by outstanding teacher/mentoring awards and formal evaluation by trainees at all levels. 2. Outside recognition of teaching/mentoring excellence as demonstrated by regional and national invited lectures, named lectureships and awards, and by teaching in specialty societies and/or national continuing medical educational courses. 3. Leadership role in major teaching or clinical training program. 4. Ongoing leadership roles in development and major participation in departmental or institutional course or educational programs, curricular offerings and innovative teaching materials (including web-based syllabi, case discussion materials and evaluation tools) and securing extramural funding for such programs.
