TEACHING THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE Recapping Our Implant Training Event!
Implant placement is no easy task. It’s not something all dentists can do, and the process requires a lot of additional courses and training. Both Dr. Issa and I have gone through extensive implant education, and we decided to use our knowledge and abilities to help train other dentists to do the same work. Signature Smiles has partnered with the Resnik Implant Institute, the leading teaching association in the United States for dentists who want to learn how to place implants. On March 17, we volunteered our facilities and services for a national training event. More than 20 dentists came to Cleveland from New York, Chicago, Texas, Canada, etc. We were impressed with the turnout and dedication as our day started at 4 a.m. to prepare for the day’s surgeries.

As summer approaches, kids will be graduating and heading off to college, leaving you as a first-time empty nester! Traveling without the kids can be a bit strange, but what better way to welcome a new chapter in your life than to head out on some great adventures? Here are some of the best destinations to consider as a new empty nester.
to do; you can hike through waterfalls, visit the beaches, rent ATVs, enjoy breathtaking sunsets, and even visit volcanoes. PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA Sure, Napa Valley is famous for vineyards and magnificent wines, but Paso Robles has a quaint small-town charm, making it the perfect destination to visit and celebrate your kids finally going off on their own. With tons of vineyards and tasting rooms, breweries, and eateries, you are bound to have a fabulous time. THE GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA While you may have taken the kids to see the Grand Canyon when they were younger, it’s time to return and rekindle the romance as empty nesters. Not only is it great to reminisce on past family trips, but scenic helicopter tours and champagne brunches on the floor of the Grand Canyon also feel a bit more intimate without the kids around. It can feel bittersweet after your last child leaves the house, but with these vacations and adventures planned, you’ll be thrilled to embark on your empty nester journey!
ALASKA Has Alaska been on your bucket list
forever, but weekends spent shuffling the kids to sports games and extracurricular activities always took priority? Now is the time! Whether you explore Alaska’s vast wilderness by sea or on land, the experience will be magical. You can go whale watching, witness the aurora borealis, or take in the majestic glaciers — the views alone make the whole trip worth it. HAWAII Unless you live on the West Coast of the U.S., a flight to Hawaii is typically long — factor in kids, and it’s even longer! That’s why Hawaii is one of the ultimate destinations once the kids have moved out. Year round, there is so much

Room for a Healthy Mouth What You Need to Know About Wisdom Teeth!
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop in the back of the mouth. They typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Many people do not have enough room in their mouths to accommodate these extra teeth, and as a result, wisdom teeth can cause several problems. One of the most common problems associated with wisdom teeth is impaction, which occurs when the teeth do not have enough room to emerge properly and become trapped or “stuck” in the jaw. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, and infection, and can also damage adjacent teeth and gums. Another problem associated with wisdom teeth is that they are difficult to clean properly, which can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Wisdom teeth are also more prone to developing cysts and benign tumors that can cause damage to the jawbone and surrounding teeth. For these reasons, many dentists recommend that wisdom teeth be removed, especially if they are causing problems or are at risk of causing problems in the future. The procedure is typically performed
by an oral surgeon and is done under local anesthesia or IV sedation. Recovery time can vary, but most people are able to return to normal activities within a week or two. It’s important to note that not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. Some people may have enough space and their wisdom teeth can develop normally without causing any problems. Your dentist or oral surgeon will be able to evaluate your situation and advise you on whether or not wisdom teeth removal is necessary for you. In summary, wisdom teeth can cause a variety of problems, including impaction, difficulty cleaning, and increased risk of decay and gum disease. For this reason, many dentists recommend that wisdom teeth be removed to prevent these problems and maintain good oral health. Consult with your dentist or oral surgeon to determine if wisdom teeth removal is necessary for you.

... continued from Cover We want every patient at Signature Smiles to have an anxiety-free experience, and that’s true even when we’re training other dentists. Every patient went through sedation led by our well-trained IV sedation dentists (Dr. Issa and Dr. Seim) and we ensured that they felt relaxed, comfortable, and confident during surgery. We walked the dentists through the process step-by-step and saw them all successfully place their first implant. We performed 32 major surgeries, and the dentists we hosted left happy and confident in their new skill set. It was a unique and rewarding experience. Knowing how to do something and teaching someone else to do it are two very different things. Dr. Issa and I both enjoyed watching these dentists grow before our eyes. We’re also excited that they’ve learned how to place implants the correct way and will eventually be able to use that knowledge to benefit their patients back home. It’s always gratifying to see a patient light up with confidence while marveling at their new smile. In this experience, we also got to see the dentists who performed the implants react in the same way. Implants change lives. The cosmetic difference alone can be astounding, but implants also keep surrounding teeth stable, reduce gum disease, and improve speech patterns. Best of all, implants prevent bone loss in the jaw; bone loss can cause significant medical problems down the line. –Dr. Omar Salameh

Can Dentists Treat Sleep Apnea?
4
Unless your partner tells you that you snore, toss, and turn or have breathing issues when you sleep, you’ll probably never know. One of the most well-known sleep disorders is sleep apnea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, around 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. But what exactly is
you show signs of sleep apnea. They will look to see if your tongue is too large, if the muscles in the back of your throat are flabby, if your jaw is too small, or if another health condition is causing breathing problems. WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS? The most-common treatment dentists suggest is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine that you can wear while asleep. However, if you cannot wear the device, your health care provider might recommend wearing oral appliances such as mandibular advancement devices (MADs), which are similar to athletic mouthguards. The device will fit over your upper and lower sets of teeth to hold the lower jaw and tongue in a forward position at night. It will help keep the tissues in your throat from blocking your airways when you sleep. Additionally, health care professionals may recommend a tongue-retaining mouthpiece that will keep your tongue from falling back into your breathing airway. While most dental offices do not treat sleep apnea, some offices specialize in the disorder. If your primary dental provider doesn’t provide treatments for sleep apnea, don’t worry; they will direct you to a specialized office that can help.
it? Sleep apnea is a health problem that affects your breathing when you’re asleep — your breathing will stop and restart when and can worsen if untreated. HOW CAN HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS TEST FOR SLEEP APNEA? If you’re concerned about your sleeping patterns or believe you have sleep apnea, a specialized sleep disorder dentist can conduct a sleep study. During the study, you will have to sleep with surface electrodes on your face and scalp. These electrodes monitor your brain and muscle activity and record your patterns. A special belt around your chest and abdomen will also help measure your breathing. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SLEEP STUDY? Once your data is collected and analyzed, your dentist will conduct a detailed assessment of your mouth if
