better than any sin, so that you feel you would rather die than grieve Him ever so little, to yield every waking moment to Him, distrusting yourself absolutely, count ing Him, and finding in Him, your all— that is the life to which He has called us. That is the great “secret” that will trans form all life for every Christian—to find the beauty, the preciousness, the victory giving power there is in “just Himself.” —E dith F. N orton . OCTOBER 20 The Sympathy of Christ "And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compas sion toward them” (Matt. 14:14). The sympathy of Christ for His people is one of the most important truths in practical theology. His compassions fail not. He knows our frame, and remembers that we are dust ; and as a father pitieth his children,1so does Christ pity those who are His friends. . . . “In all their affliction he was afflicted.” “For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” When on earth, how often did He exhibit pity and compassion toward both His friends and enemies!— G eorge H ope M onilaws . There is no sorrow, Lord, too slight To bring in prayer to Thee ; There is no burdening care too light To wake Thy sympathy. OCTOBER 21 Activity as a Snare “Be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer” (1 Pet. 4:7). I often think activity is one of the great est snares of the church of Christ today. We are forgetful of the fact that five min utes’ work in the power of the Spirit of God is worth five years’ work without the Spirit of God; and that if we were only more in fellowship with God, our words would have a power that at present they have not. Luther, a far busier man than any of us is likely to be, used to say on some of his busiest days, “I have so much work to do today that I do not see how I can get on without two or three hours of prayer” ........ What does God think of our being so busy that we have not time fo r prayer? —G. H. C. M acgregor . OCTOBER 22 T aught of th e Spirit "The Holy Ghost . . . shall teach you" (John 14:26). Guidance does not mean the guidance of the Spirit apart from the Scriptures. The Word of God is something more than a crutch; it is the very path we have to walk in, and there must be a path if we are go ing to be guided. “He will guide you into all truth.” The path is the truth, and the truth is the Scripture. . . . Let us be more dependent upon the Spirit when we come to God’s Holy Word. . . . We want more of this calm waiting upon God to hear Him speak. Lord, I thank Thee for the writ ten Word. May the Spirit quicken that Word in my soul, to make it a living Word.— Life of Faith. OCTOBER 23 K ept from Falling “He m il keep the feet of his saints" (1 Sam. 2:9). Deliverance of our soul from death is our first need; deliverance of our. feet — S elected .

OCTOBER 16 The Love T h at Is of God “We love him, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). I love my God, but with no love of mine, For I have none to give; I love Thee, Lord, but all the love is Thine, For by Thy love I live. I am as nothing, and rejoice to be Emptied, and lost, and swallowed up in Thee. Thou, Lord, alone art all Thy children need, And there is none beside; From Thee the streams of blessedness proceed, In Thee the bless’d abide; Fountain of life, and all-abounding grace, Our source, our center, and our dwelling place. —M adame G uyon . OCTOBER 17 C arried “I have made, . . . I will carry” (Isa. 46:4). The least little child can come and trust in the Lord. The great Earl Shaftesbury once said, “Do you know, the greatest pleasure and joy of my life was when a little child of thè street came up to me, after looking at this and the other one, and said, ‘Please, sir, carry me across ! ||| And he took up the little thing in his arms, and carried it across. Cannot we be sim ple as little children, come to our Lord in our need, and say to Him, “Oh, for all the love Thou hast for us, just carry us across all this danger, all- this deficiency, and carry us beyond and above all the temptations of sin that have the mastery over us” I By the grace of our God, we are all privileged to have the closest fellowship with Him, now, at the present moment. —B ishop H ill . OCTOBER 18 Know W hat Is Prom ised “.That by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature” (2 Pet. 1 :4). Let us know the promises! Should we not carry them at our fingers’ ends? Should we not know them better than anything else? The promises should be the classics of believers. If you have not read the last new book, and have not heard the last act of the Government, yet know right well what God the Lord hath said, and look to see His Word made good. We ought to be so versed in Scripture as always to have at the tip of our tongue the promise which most exactly meets our case. . . . The precious promises of our great God are expressly intended1 to be taken to Him, and exchanged for the blessings which they guarantee. Prayer takes the promise to the Bank of Faith, and obtains the golden blessing. —C harles H addon S purgeon ;. OCTOBER 19 V ictory in Christ “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him." (Col. 2 :9, 10). How long a time I lived the Christian life without discovering the secret of true joy and constant victory! But at last, one day, the beautiful secret was imparted to me, and life became a changed thing. . . . To love the Lord Jesus Christ better than anything that would deny you His fellow ship and constant .presence, to love Him
