TO THE CHAPTER INVISIBLE
“ GIBSON’S SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS AS A CHARTER MEMBER OF THE DOVER (DE) ALUMNI CHAPTER AND A SEVENTY-EIGHT-YEAR MEMBER OF OUR GRAND FRATERNITY EXEMPLIFIED ‘ACHIEVEMENT IN EVERY FIELD OF HUMAN ENDEAVOR,’ AS HE EXCELLED IN ALL TASKS THAT HE ATTEMPTED.”
WWII veterans helped thwart the college’s closing. Upon graduating from Delaware State College (1950) with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, Gibson became one of four Black stu- dents chosen to integrate the previously all-White University of Delaware, where he faced discrimina- tion and opposition due to his race. He later earned a master’s degree in public administration. Dorothy’s influence led Gibson to make Delaware his permanent home and the place where they raised their family. In doing so, Delaware continues to ben- efit from his many talents as a civil rights activist, educator, architect, and internationally recognized artist. He went on to serve 38 years as a teacher–21
years at Delaware Technical Community College, 16 years in the Milford School District, and one year in Maryland. Gibson taught Architectural Engineer- ing until he retired. He studied architecture at the University of Hawaii while in the Navy. Gibson is credited as the lead architect of five churches throughout Delaware, the
Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Dover, Delaware, and the Delaware Agriculture Museum. He was also an internationally renowned wildfowl carver, earning him an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute’s Arts and Crafts Festival in 2003. His passion for social justice led him to run for the Milford, Delaware City
Council in 1963, making him the first Black man in the town’s history to do so. Gibson’s significant contributions as a Charter Member of the Dover (DE) Alumni Chapter and a seven- ty-eight-year member of our grand fraternity exemplified “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor,” as he excelled in all tasks that he attempted. ♦
