young Harris, and he felt Kappa’s gravitational pull. After graduating, he enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, TN. Initially drawn to MTSU’s recording and music program, but after a few semesters he had to enroll in a junior college after failing out. Vowing not to give up, he raised his GPA and returned to MTSU with new clarity and purpose. He set his sights firmly on the fraternity. His pledge process required

commitment and perseverance. When he crossed the burning sands into Kappa Land, he gained not only a lifelong brotherhood but also friend- ships that continues to shape his life today. Leadership soon followed, and his election as Eta Gamma’s Polemarch expanded his opportunities. By the time he joined the South Central Province Board of Directors, he had discovered a new ambition for leadership. “I ran for Junior Province Vice Polemarch and lost,” he says with a smile. “But I learned so much because

I’ve failed up my entire life.” A conver- sation with Past South Central Province Polemarch John P. Russell (Alpha Tau 1967) opened a new door. Encouraged to seek Grand Chapter office, Harris ran for Grand Lt. Strategus unopposed and won in 2001. Serving the 29th Admin- istration under then Grand Polemarch, Howard L. Tutman, Jr., Brother Harris traveled and connected with Nupes nationwide, while witnessing excel- lence manifested in so many forms and personified by so many brothers. His most memorable moment as
