PARTY WITH A PURPOSE THE KAPPA TAKEOVER
The Kappa Takeover’s Friday comedy show included Rodney “Red” Grant (Gamma Chi 1990) and Melanie Comarcho.
“ THE KAPPA TAKEOVER WAS ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE COMBINED EFFORTS OF FOUR LOCAL KAPPA FOUNDATIONS AND ONE ALUMNI CHAPTER OF KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INC.”
HISTORICAL FOUNDATION What began as an initiative to create an upscale, socially resonant gathering that would also serve as a mechanism for charitable giving has morphed into a weekend-long celebration of fun and goodwill. Unlike standard entertain- ment-oriented events, The Takeover was conceived specifically to generate transformative funding for local and national programs. Drawing upon the prestige and professional networks of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. mem- bers, the event quickly distinguished itself as a “must-attend” event in the Washington, DC area. Central to the Kappa Takeover is its commitment to reinvestment in community resources. Proceeds are directed into programming for six areas of need: • Educational Access: Funding for college scholarship awards enables stu- dents to overcome financial barriers. • Youth Mentorship: Through its sup- port of Kappa League programs, the Kappa Takeover has advanced leader- ship preparation for adolescent males,
emphasizing discipline, educational attainment, and civic responsibility. • Health & Wellness Initiatives: Sup- ports public health campaigns that strengthen communal well-being. Nota- bly, the event has historically supported the fraternity’s signature initiative with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. • Social Support: Partnerships with organizations such as the Prince George’s County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center provide tangible aid to survivors. In addition, the event funds annual toy, coat, and book drives to address material needs among under served families.
• STEM Engagement: Collaboration with programs such as the National Society of Black Engineers Jr. fosters the entry of underrepresented youth into STEM fields. • Economic Development: The Kappa Takeover hires minority businesses for the production and execution of each event. Minority contractors include graphic and web designers, print- ers, videographers, photographers, event planners, logistics coordina- tors, sponsors, goods and services vendors, transportation providers, event producers, and entertainment professionals.
