making him the third recipient in the sport of golf to receive this honor. More recently, McDougal became the first Black person to be inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame on October 17, 2025. In 2022, North- western Athletics Chief Operating Officer Patrick Goss spearheaded a research project to unearth histor- ical content to be used as the basis for submitting an Illinois Hall of Fame Nomination form to the Illinois PGA. As a golf enthusiast, Goss was inspired by McDougal’s story of personal achievement, courage, and commitment to golf while facing arduous barriers. This led Goss to research McDougal and recruit others (including Central Michigan Univer- sity History Professor Lane Demas, Northwestern University Archivist Kevin Leonard, USGA Senior Histo- rian Victoria Nennoto, University of Miami Professor Dr. Marvin Dawkins, and NYU Professor Dr. Jefferey Sam- mons) to assist him in constructing a complete story for submission to
the nomination committee. Goss was subsequently informed that McDou- gal’s nomination was approved, and McDougal was honored, along with five other individuals, as a 2025 Illinois Golf Hall of Fame inductee. The event was held at the Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois, on October 17, 2025. McDougal’s family, including his son, Horace L. McDougal, was present to receive his posthumous induction award on his behalf. His granddaughter, Dr. Dionne Powell, spoke in representation of the family when accepting the award. Grand Historian Kevin P. Scott and Evan- ston (IL) Alumni Chapter Polemarch Willard S. Evans (Evanston (IL) Alumni 2019) were present for this occasion. Grand Historian Scott was invited by Brother Herbert Wilson (Norristown (PA) Alumni 2005), husband of McDougal’s grand- daughter, Jill McDougal Wilson. McDougal’s great-grandson, Ross O.L. Wilson, continues his legacy by playing varsity golf in high school. ♦
