Event Information Desks GPU information desks are located in the front lobbies of East and West Akers Hall and East and West Holmes Hall. Information boards in each lobby will provide up-to-date information and announcements. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide directions during these times:

Health and Medical Emergencies GPU maintains a list of urgent care facilities and emergency room facilities should you or your child/grandchild require medical care during the program. While we cannot prevent all pathogens that may be shared in our environments, we ask that you do the best you can to protect yourself and to be considerate of others. Be diligent about good handwashing hygiene. Research shows that good handwashing is the most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of infectious disease. If There Is a Medical Emergency • Call 911. • Let a staff member know there is a problem. If you get sick or hurt during GPU, you or someone with you should contact GPU General Headquarters at (517) 353-3358. The child's parent or guardian will be contacted using the contact information on their Medical Treatment Authorization form. In the case of a night-time emergency, contact the night staff. They will put you in touch with the GPU program director. Emergency Contact Information If an emergency arises at home and your family cannot reach you via your cell phone, Grandparents University General Headquarters can be contacted at (517) 353-3358 and a message will be relayed to the participant. The participant can use a phone designated by the program staff to return the call if needed. Participant Cell Phones If you bring a cell phone to this program, please turn it off during class session times so that you can participate fully and not disrupt the other participants. Please tell your family and friends to limit their calls and texts to you during the event so that you can make the most of your experience.

Name Badges, Conference Cards and Room Keys Attendees must wear a name badge at all times. Your name badge has your individual class schedule attached with times and locations of your daytime classes and evening activities, and guarantees your admission to those classes, evening activities and GPU shuttle buses. Your conference card serves as your meal ticket and is only valid in the dining service of the residence hall where you are staying. Participants are responsible for the safe-keeping of their conference cards and room keys and must return them at check-out. Grandparents University Buses There are two bus routes for GPU, and each will be marked with GPU signs at bus stop locations. The Green Line is the main shuttle and runs in a set loop around campus. The White Line runs to specific class and evening activity locations that are distant from central campus areas. Please note: the White Line will only make runs to specific locations for officially scheduled activities. If you are required to ride the White Line, there will be a note on your class schedule.

Capital Area Multimodal Gateway Additional White Line Bus Stops If you are required to ride the White Line, there will be a note on your class schedule. Please be sure you are at the White Line stop (in front of McDonel Hall) at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled class time to be sure you do not miss your activity. The White Line bus will leave its stop 25 minutes prior to the start of class, and it will only make one trip to the class location. ODDS & ENDS Check-Out Procedures Luggage carts will be available in the hall lobbies on Thursday. Leave your linens, towels and garbage in your room for hall staff to collect after you leave. Turn your room key and conference card into the hall desk closest to your side of your building. All cards and keys must be returned by 2 p.m. on Thursday. There is a $20 fee for each unreturned conference card and a $75 fee for each unreturned room key. Each participant will be billed for any unreturned cards or keys.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Explore campus following the scavenger hunt page in your bag. Turn in your paper at the table on the east side of the hall where you are staying between 6:30-9 p.m., Wednesday, June 28. All participating members must be present when collecting the prize.

2023 FUN FACTS

Play Games • Board games and puzzles are available in each lobby. • Putt putt golf is available outside of Holmes West. You can pick up putters and balls inside the Holmes West Lobby 8 a.m.-9 p.m.

Buses will run to the parking lots from 12–2:30 p.m. Guests must leave the hall by 2 p.m.

Lost and Found Any items found can be brought to the West Akers Information Desk. Please be careful to collect your belongings, especially in classes and on buses. We cannot guarantee that lost items will be located. Heat Related Injuries • Monitor your pulse and if it is significantly higher at rest than normal, take a break in the shade or air conditioning. • Take more breaks than you would normally, and drink water frequently, every 20-30 minutes. • Know the early symptoms of heat injury. Stop when you have early symptoms and rehydrate. • Wear loose fitting, breathable clothing when being in the hot sun.

orientation, marital status, family status, veteran status or other protected category under the University’s Anti- Discrimination Policy. • Remember that you are responsible for your own belongings. Leave your valuables (such as expensive clothing, jewelry and electronic devices) at home. We recommend labeling your belongings with your name. If you lose anything, check with the West Akers Information Desk. MSU and Grandparents University are not responsible for any lost or missing items. You will be charged a fee if you lose your room key or conference card. • You must keep your assigned room once assignments have been made and keys and conference cards issued. • Abstain from inappropriate sexual behavior including sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual abuse, or intimate physical/sexual contact. • Do not use cameras or other digital recording devices in locker rooms, restrooms, showers, or other areas where privacy is expected. • Do not leave the program grounds except for field trips arranged as part of the program under the supervision of event staff. • Do not gamble for money or for any other items or behaviors. • Refrain from yelling out of windows, removing window screens and leaning out of windows or sitting on window ledges. Close your blinds when dressing and after dark. • Refrain from running in residence halls and classroom hallways. • Use roller skates, in-line skates (such as rollerblades) and scooters ONLY on sidewalks. Users of these devices may not use bike paths, parking ramps, buildings, gardens or any other posted area, or go on any roadway except while crossing a street within a crosswalk. Hoverboards are not allowed. • Water bottles may not be filled in the dining halls. • No theft of property, regardless of owner, will be tolerated. • Dress appropriately for the program schedule. • Unacceptable attire includes clothing that: • Exposes undergarments or

tight shirts, tube tops, short-shorts, excessively baggy or extreme low- rise pants). Swimsuits may only be worn for swimming and not as regular clothing. If wearing your swimsuit to and from the pool, please use an over- garment or cover-up. • Conveys a violent or obscene message or image. • Promotes use of an illegal substance. • Always wear shirts and shoes in eating areas. Participants who violate program rules, cause disruption, or otherwise engage in misconduct are subject to discipline or dismissal from the program. Parents or guardians will be contacted if such circumstances arise. Contact will be made either by the participants—while under the supervision of the event program staff —or directly by the program staff. Parents or guardians will be informed of what has happened and what the follow-up action will be. The possible consequences depend on the facts and circumstances of the underlying misconduct and may include: • WARNING: The participant is given a second chance, with a clear understanding of the behavior expected. • Immediate dismissal from the event. • Prohibition from participating in other MSU programs. • Referral to the appropriate law enforcement authority. Violation of Rules Youth Participants A participant who is dismissed early from Grandparents University is expected to leave immediately and will incur any related expenses. Adult Participants Disciplinary action can range from a discussion and verbal warning to immediate dismissal from the event. If inappropriate behavior continues after behavior expectations have been reviewed with the adult participant and a warning has been issued, the adult will be asked to leave the event immediately at his or her own expense and arrangement. The offending adult may also be prohibited from being involved with other MSU programs. If a law violation is involved, the adult will be turned over to the appropriate law enforcement authority.

Grandparents University Code of Conduct Participation in Grandparents University is subject to the observance of the program rules. Any participant who knowingly violates this code of conduct is subject to discipline, up to and including removal from the activity he or she is participating in (at his or her own expense). Determination of disciplinary action shall be done with input from the volunteers and staff overseeing the program or activity. Final decisions about discipline will be made by the Grandparents University Committee. Additional information related to Grandparents University conduct expectations and safety is available at alumni.msu.edu/grandparents in the FAQ section. Grandparents University Participants Will: • Show respect for, and cooperate with, fellow participants, volunteers, and staff. • Follow both MSU and Grandparents University policies and procedures when participating in any Grandparents University sponsored event. • Under no circumstances commit or threaten violence toward any individual, group, or the program. • Under no circumstances possess, sell or consume alcohol, tobacco or any controlled substances at Michigan State University or Grandparents University. • Under no circumstances attend or participate in a Grandparents University activity or event under the infl uence of alcohol and/or controlled substances (including tobacco, electronic cigarettes etc.). • Under no circumstances bring dangerous or unauthorized materials (such as fi reworks, explosives, weapons, or similar items) to a Grandparents University activity or event. • Abstain from hazing, harassment or bullying of another participant, volunteer or staff member (either in face-to-face interactions, through social media or other communication venues), particularly when the behavior is based on a person’s appearance, race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, religion, age, height, weight, disability, political beliefs, sexual

excessively exposes the body (such as cropped low-cut or extremely
